  1. I've just recently started really practicing reading the tarot. I have two different decks that are extremely different. One is very detailed and the other is very minimalistic with only line drawings and uses basic symbols for the minor arcana. The images on the simple deck also seem to be completely unrelated to the traditional imagery. So I have a few questions. Firstly, when the minor arcana have no individual images, do you just remember the meanings that you've learned elsewhere and apply it? Or is there some trick to feeling intuition when there aren't many visual clues? Secondly, the basic meanings for the major arcana in the simple deck are completely different from what the cards usually mean. Would it be okay to ignore them and just use the meanings I've learned before, or should I stick to the 'vision' of the deck and learn the unique meanings? Lastly, how differently do different tarot decks usually read? How much have you found is from your own knowledge and intuition and how much is down to what the artist has chosen to portray? How important is the art style in a reading? Thank you for any help :)
  2. I've never really had an affinity for tarot specifically. I lucked out and found an oracle deck that basically screamed at me every time I went into my local shop until I finally bought it. Every single reading I have done for other people has been spot on, though per clients, almost brutally honest. That being said, I had never successfully read for myself until burning gum arabic and calling on ancestors for support. Since employing this method, I've had two accurate readings. Does anyone else have this issue? I've been told that some decks, whether oracle or tarot are just finicky. Some will only work for the reader, some will only work for the clients. I'm happy to have found a solution for my particular problem, but I'm curious as to others' thoughts on the issue. Does anyone else have a hard time reading themselves?
  3. I recently ran across a quote from an anonymous source in a old witchcraft magazine from 1914 called the word. The quote is as follows: "But divination, in whatever manner we may operate is dangerous or at least useless for it disheartens the will. Consequently, it restricts the freedom and fatigues the nervous system. A hebrew prophet once said "he that consulteth spirits will not sow" ". I've always used the tarot to guide me. I've even used it to decide how I should go about a magical operation, what I should avoid etc..But this quote got me thinking, what if divination is doing me more harm than good? I always felt like the whole point of divination is to understand whats coming so we have an opportunity to change it...I'd love to get some other perspectives on this. Was there ever a time when you felt like divination was more restrictive than freeing?
  4. I just finished Numen Naturae: The Magician's Wand, a collection of essays edited by Casandra Johns and put out last year through House of Hands, which is a collection of essays on the seemingly idiosyncratically specific, but very illuminating topic of the the archetype of the Magician in the tarot, the plant spirit of Yarrow, and the overlap between the two. I've always been fascinated by the Magician, and I have been working a lot with Yarrow lately, so naturally I found the book quite enlightening. A great deal of the book deals only with examinations of the Magus (within and outside of the tarot), but it does come around in the end and return to the topic of yarrow, and makes a strong case for the connection between the two. It was really a lovely read, delving as deeply as it did, and from so many perspectives, into a topic that was at once ultra-specific and totally universal in its scope. There's Jungian perspectives, animist meditations, and more, and even some practical magic that can be followed contained herein. Reading it was really an initiatory experience for me, and I can't recommend this book highly enough to anyone who wants to better understand what it is to work magic, or who works with the tarot, and especially to anyone who works with yarrow or regards Yarrow as a teacher plant. 10/10 PS: I guess this is supposed to be the first installment in a series that will pair each trump in the major arcana with a plant teacher; I think there's already another one out that pairs the Tower with Devil's Club.
  5. So I have a question... I did a basic Celtic cross spread for myself yesterday, and got some, um, stuff. Well, I guess what I am saying is pretty much as the title states: I could use another person (or other intelligent minds) to give some input on the reading, hence the thread. There are a lot of changes going on in my life right now. I recently got a big ass promotion, and am currently going through a bit of an upheaval at home and within my own mind, spiritually. I have also (kind of) re-begun things with someone from my past. That being said, the thing that was on my mind as I was shuffling the cards was this: "What is up with this person? What role do they/will they play in my life?" So, here are the cards as I laid them: 1) Lovers 2) 6 Cups 3) 6 Pentacles 4) Fool 5) 8 Wands 6) 8 Cups 7) Heirophant 8) Strength 9) Page of Swords 10) Page of Cups I can see each card for what role it plays in the reading alone, but trying to interpret the reading as a whole is a bit overwhelming. There are more major arcana cards than I am used to, different ones, and it is a lot to take in.
  6. Good day I think I might be losing the ability to read tarot (if such a thing is possible). Coming from a ritual magick background I have always done a reading before attempting any spells etc. I have however recently found that my deck is unreliable, withholding information and misleading me. I have cleansed it, redone the blessing and even acquired a second deck. I am at my wits end, and I think I might even be losing my touch ;( Does anybody have any insight or advice to offer? I would really appreciate a different perspective and help.

    Tarot a Day

Yesterday and today I shuffled my Mythic Tarot deck thoroughly and then picked the top card after cutting the deck in half. Yesterday was the Four of Wands, and actually the day before this I got Temperance. Today was Nine of Wands. They all so oddly fit with my thoughts and feelings it was profound. Each day!!! So I had to write something about it here. I wrote a blog entry for today's card at Deviantart dot com. http://theneva.deviantart.com/ also. So now I'm motivated to continue the daily card reads. It can only get better. Or maybe it's just the fact that I'm a stickler for shuffling thoroughly enough. lol I used to play solitaire a lot. A LOT. My gramma did too. Guess I picked up the habit from her a bit. She never read tarot but cards feel familiar to me in so many ways.
  8. Today is a very important business meeting for my dear husband and I wanted to try to grant him as much success as possible... I lit several purple candles plus an orange one for power of positive communication and power. I laid out 3 tarot cards (the Wheel of Fortune, The Magician, and the 8 of Pentacles), I also placed the Angels card called "You're a Leader" next to one of the lit candles. I then chanted the following 3x... I light the purple candles for power on this Woden's Day, now burn the orange candle for skill and dexterity. From these two colors springs magick on this business day, send wisdom, communication skills, and clarity his (my husband) way!:chakrahearts: Feel free to use this spell yourself if you or someone you know is self-employed or works for someone else and wants to impress their boss. :) :stirring:
