  1. I agree - it's good to double-check steps. A few years ago, I did some major spellwork that involved a negative aspect to it. Well, the spell seemed to miss it's target somehow and I swear - it backfired back at my family. We survived and dealt with consquences but I am very unlikely to attempt that sort of activity in future. It's definitely worth it to go slowly.
  2. heehee. DARK for me is listening to Chopin. Those Abba girls sure could sing! :-)
  3. I have had this ability to pick up or forecast music, events, etc since I was a very small child. I have simply thought that exactly what i was doing, somehow, was tuning into a radio frequency. I feel if i can sense events before they occur, receive messages from other planes, read minds...i can likely tune into music being or about to be played on radio. I wish i had deeper understanding, however.
  4. I am reading this thread again and still maintain power of a witch and the femininity of a woman are not or at least need not be related to hair. I mentioned that I am bald now due to alopecia that wiped out my hair in two weeks? I think I am more powerful than ever, still receive compliments and positive attention...still considered beautiful or not, depending on the viewer. What I do see, as a female who has had no hair for several years, is a lot of attention given to the notion that women need hair to be powerful, feminine, etc. I am now so used to seeing my bare head in mirror, I notice a lot of bad hair cuts, a lot of people hiding or clinging to long unshapely hair. So, I just don't believe hair actually contributes to either my beauty or my power. I mourn the loss of it because society seems to have issues with women being powerful and gorgeous without hair ..but i don't think it is a necessary feature of a witch or a woman.
  5. I am a mum of young children...based on this and my own childhood yearnings, I say this is normal behavior and just do what fits your values and instincts. I may be a learning, evolving witch but I don't view my practice and studies as a religion. I am not sure if you do..my apologies if I misread. I simply tell the kids magic is real and they see evidence of the craft in the house. As to a 5 year old wanting spells and wands and power (that's part of it, non), this instance should be no different than if he declared he wanted champagne and oysters. I mean he can want it,he can see you consume, but, doesn't mean he is ready to eat. You are the mum... I would just involve him as you see fit, in keeping with your beliefs and ignore the requests for wands. My 8 year old is one angry sensitive dude...he wants to hex half the world right now...but doesn't mean I will let him. I hope this post is helpful. Good luck! :-) I wanted to add... I also think you shouldn't be to hard on yourself about "raising him pagan traditions". Expose your child as you can and let him figure out his way too...think of children raised in strong Christian or Islamic traditions who rebel...he will find his own path...it will be great if you create strong loving memories but ultimately his path is his own. (=mental note to self:. Reread post when my own son is 16.)
  6. Glad you had a good time ... i have two young ones ...the break sounds great. I have not heard of GreyFriars...I will look it up as your post was interesting. I am Canadian but most of ancestors are from Scotland. Fascinating post!!!
  7. Some of you may have (or may not have missed) the posts of mine - I have a bald head and am female. My hair fell out due to alopecia. I can't stress enough how much I believe the power of hair is symbolic and definitely depends on the witch's own beliefs. For me, when my lovely hair was shedding (it fell out in a few weeks), I felt like I was losing my power (and my mind). So, I had DH shave my head - and there was a shorn head. I felt pretty powerful. I'd confronted my fears and felt pretty damn cool and sexy, to be honest. Some days when I'm feeling low, my bare head feels vulnerable. But other times - it's just the opposite - I just look at the mops on people's heads and think, "bald is sexy!". I truly believe the power is within the witch.
  8. Very very helpful information. Thank you for taking the time to post such a detailed reply, Michele. Over the last month, or so, I've started greeting my ancestors etc in the morning, lighting a candle, putting out some offerings ... simple stuff. Good to know I'm on the right track. I have a silly question that I've yet to see mentioned in any thread ... what do people do with their offerings of food after they've been put out? If you put out some fruit or candy or anything at all for your ancestors/spirits - how do you dispose of it? I put out some chocolate one day along with my candles and my conversation ... and then I thought - what do I do with this stuff? Throw it out? Bury it? I am Curious about this little detail!
  9. Just bumping up this old thread ... thought some of the newer members would find it helpful. I'm also just beginning to embark on this sort of work and feel a bit lost. I occasionally hear voices or have visitations (during my dreams, however) but really NOTHING that qualifies as "working" with ancestors and spirits. And, as for my ancesters - I actually haven't met any of them but a grandfather and didn't know him well at all. I have my suspicions about who is around me regularly, however. I'm hoping someone could tell me or direct me - how do you actually get to the point where you are communicating with ancestors and spirits on a regular basis? I need a concrete guide, I think.
  10. My apologies, Tana, on my use of the word, "bull shit". This is an emotional topic for me. Apologies.
  11. No, I just don't agree. Sure I'm biased but I'm also very attune to energy and aware of people's hair. I've encountered a lot of people, not particularly powerful people, with a lot of hair. If anything I find hair drains people, pulls them down. How many people do you meet that are low energy, depressed and stuck in ruts and they have long unkempt hair? If being bald or having shorn hair meantt powerless, less magical potency - I would guess a lot of people would be affected. There are so many bald or somewhat hairless people in the world. I may have a somewhat uncommon condition (and please don't pity me because I "rock" the bald look quite well, thanks) but there are a lot of people who shave their heads or have androgenetica alopecia (female or male pattern baldness). My thought is that if there is a connection - the connection is the hair is a cover - a cover - bear with me - over the crown chakra. A tremendous amount of energy pours in and out of the crown area (IMO) ... so perhaps the hair is a protective thing that actually protects our sixth sense, etc.? Again, I feel pretty powerful since losing my hair and haven't not ever felt less magically potent. If anything, I feel stronger and more potent because of this freeing of this hair? Again, it's how you look it ... most people in my eyes, these days, have "bad hair" and I don't see it as a magical accessory but perhaps a protective security blanket?
  12. I think it's pure bull shit. And may I emphasis this statement?!!! Why? Because I've struggled with alopecia areata much of my life... I've lost my hair completely. I am a witch and I have power. It's not my hair or lack of my hair - if that was the case, I'd be the weakest most energy deprived person around and this is not the case.
  13. I love Kate Bush. I'll have to explore some of her newer works, though - I'm out of touch with what she's done lately. Thank you for this post. I own The Kick Inside and Never for Ever albums. I think I'd played, "The Kick Inside" start to finish almost 700 times or more. I guess at this number because there was a stage in my life where I'd flip on this album and play it over and over every single day - for about 2 years! :party9:
  14. I need to run through this thread with pen and paper ... there are such good title suggestions here. I'm reading through The Temple of High Witchcraft: Ceremonies, Spheres and The Witches' Qabalah by Christopher Penczak. I own two other Penczak titles (his Reiki book and the first in his Temple series) and seem to enjoy his writing voice and the way he organizes his books. I'm making my way through this book ... it's an enjoyable read and I like his suggested exercises he includes. I don't think I'll buy this book ... I think I'm going to first explore the texts mentioned in Penczak's bibliography.
  15. I see both sides of the discussion - definitely I believe that all (or most) people can sense other emotions but there are people, I believe, who are more atune and more sensitive to this psychic energy of others. Although I've always been intuitive and sensitive, it was not until I received my first Reiki attunement that I became full-blown open to others' emotions and illnesses. Not sayin' this is everyone's case - just mine. At this point, if I don't do a protective ritual every morning, I end up with nausea, dizziness and lose any grounding. I can feel - literally - ill or incredibly negative people s u c k energy out of me. I'm getting much better at protecting myself, though. As i get older too - I realize the huge need for people (of all ages) to learn to draw physical and mental boundaries. Just my two cents but I notice amongst my friends that the ones that have issues drawing boundaries in their own lives also tend to pick up a lot of other people's psychic crap.
  16. This sounds a bit like my pile of books. Alway a healthy cookbook, a novel and an occult book ...
  17. How may of you believe in synchronicity? Definitely, I believe in synchronicity. (I've found Jung's works to be incredibly fascinating - would have loved to have met that man!) Sometimes, really significant life events are connected in such an amazing fluid way - it's synchronicity. I find, though, just as often (if not MORE often), it's insignificant things that unfold. The events still seems synchronistic but I'm left shaking my head, wondering what "was the point?" Do you see this as being a part of Divinity, or some kind of Cosmic Unconsciousness (as Jung believed)? Both. I won't now for sure until I pass out of this life, I guess. I do believe we are all connected, somehow. I do believe there is some Divine power that has created this life we live. Still working on the details. Do you think Fate is the same thing as synchronicity? No. In my mind the word fate means something that is predestined - very very explicit and linear and black & white. Synchronicity refers, imo, to unrelated events coming together to give a person a meaningful experience.
  18. Anya - I love that design! I don't age should be a factor in choosing to tattoo. I know many people who got their first tattoos at age 50 and are now addicted to them!
  19. I'll play too.:suprised_witch: 1. What is your favorite witchy movie? Bell, Book & Candle with Kim Novak and I Married a Witch with Veronica Lake 2. Where is your favorite place to do a spell? What is your LEAST favorite ingredient to use in a spell? parts of an animal 7. What is your favorite witchy holiday/festival? Halloween 8. Do you have an animal spirit, If yes, how many? Not sure 9. If yes to #8, name the animal spirit(s): possibly an Eagle 10. Name your favorite witchy character: Endora from Bewitched 11. When was the last time you did a hex/curse? When I was a young child 12. Have you ever done a spell on someone just because you were bored? No 16. What is your strength as a witch? Rebellious streak (thinking beyond rules) and creative 17. What is your weakness as a witch? my ego 18. If you could go back in time to meet ANYBODY associated in witchcraft, who would it be and why? I'd be happy to meet any old grandmotherly type of woman who practiced folk magic and traditional witchery. I'm more interested in meeting an average wise woman than a historically famous witch. I'd have liked to meet Arthur Findlay who is a big part of the Spiritualist movement. 19. How much of a "modern stereotyped witch" applied to you as a witch? I don't think in linear, concrete fashion. If the stereotype means goth - no - those days are over for me. I have a big pentacle on my front door. That's about it! 20. How long have you been a member of this forum? Almost 2 months I think.
  20. Amber - I think you wrote my thoughts! " feel rootless in some respects and have always felt like I'm not living where I am supposed to be just yet" That's often how I feel. I've also felt very much connected to a healing energy. Even though I've felt rootless (in my own land here in my patch of Canada), I've seen glimpses of past lives and also have sensed I was once a healer of sorts. (At least I think so!)
  21. Well, for me, I don't feel particularly connected to any particular ancestoral land. My ancestors left their homelands at least 4 to 5 if not 11 generations ago. So, I don't feel deeply connected to any particular place. (Mind you I think I had a past live in the Deep South of the U.S!) But, I feel connected to nature and the outdoors in general. What does strike me - in terms of being a traditional witch - is feeling that the power of what guides the Universe is accessible on my own. So, I feel like I can connect, using traditional witchcraft, to energy that guides our world, other worlds. I think other people connect to the same energy - just in different ways. And some people that are traditional witches likely don't feel the connection to a higher power that I do? I'm sure everyone that responds to this thread will give a very different answer.
