Mountain Witch
I'm basically a Kris Bradley fan. Her blog, Confessions of a Pagan Soccer Mom, is witty & has some practical tips. Therefore, when she announced her book, I naturally pre-ordered it. The book is a 50/50 for me. While it has some great recipes and suggestions for working with kids, it's a little too fluffy for my taste and makes some rather broad assumptions. As someone who doesn't work with deity at all, the first sentence of Chapter 3 almost made me gag, "Every domestic witch will eventually look into the subject of finding a household deity". A little further on, she briefly addresses the concept of a household guardian - more to my taste. If you do deity, it's a good reference. If you don't, buy it for the recipes and other suggestions. I'll be referring back to it when the grandkids get old enough. 3/5 stars
thevioletsunflower
Great review, MW, thanks! In chapter 3 does anything she offer about household deities translate to household guardians? Meaning could you use some of what she has said about deity with guardians at all, do you think?
Mountain Witch
Most of chapter 3 is devoted to describing different deities from different traditions (Celtic, Japanese, Roman, etc., etc.) Honestly? I skipped the majority of that chapter. The wee part on household guardians is good but all too brief. I suppose if you had multiple household guardians, you could use the rest of the deity stuff in the other chapters for them but it just didn't sit right with me or the way I work with my guardians. I am a mom to an almost 3 year old, 4.5 year old, pregnant with another, and we consider ourselves just getting started, so when I hear Pagan Soccer Mom - as opposed to all the bible-thumping large family blogs I have to sift through.. I get excited! As for the book, Ill pick it up for the recipes and kids stuff - assuming diety worship makes me frown, but I haven't found a witchy book yet where there wasn't at least one chapter that I wish I could throw out. sarahdansbee
A little fluffy? That's a shame, but the fact that it has good ideas for kids may have me putting it on the wish list.... Or is it really anything that I could just get from her blog for free?
Mountain Witch
Or is it really anything that I could just get from her blog for free? Honestly? I kinda skipped all the blogs about kids' stuff. (Grandkids aren't old enough, yet. I research when I need something, not before.) So I can't say yay or nay in that regard but I suspect there's more in the book than on the blog. Most writers are like that. ;)
