How Do You Say....

How do you say athame? I was watching something the other day and there were a couple of different pronunciations:

Ath - a - mee

Ath - ay - me

Atha - may

I was just curious because I'm not sure I really know the actual way to say it, I always say atha-may but I could be wrong.

I have always heard it pronounced as Atha-may.

I have always said ath-a-may, although I've heard it many different ways. I'd also look into "ardhame" (my spelling could be way off) which is similiar but has different associations than the arthame/ritual knife. Some believe the ardhame was the origin of the athame and the ardhame is also called the letter of blood (as in one that lets blood, not an alphabet letter) used much in the carving and making of man according to some beliefs.

I've always heard and said atha - may so I think you're correct, but me being mistaken happens lately.

I've almost always heard it "AH tha may" (which I use) but some pronounce it "ah THA may" and Wikipedia even has the pronunciation, "AH tha mee". Honestly? Whatever works for you. Everyone knows what you're talking about.

I say ah-tha-may. I watched something recently where someone pronounced it ah-thay-me and that's the first time I'd heard a different pronunciation.

But as MW says, whatever works for you! People will know what you mean so go with whichever pronunciation you feel better with.

I never had any idea how to pronounce it till I saw a Charmed rerun where they were talking about them. I don't use an athame so it never really mattered, my knife is a knife.

(I've bolded what I'm replyint to): Same here really hehe. I have one, back from all those years ago when I had only wiccan books to read and they gave a checklist of things you MUST have :pumpkin_rolleyes: I think I used it, maybe, once. It's been sat in it's box ever since!

hahaha... knife, athame, whatever you want to call it. I don't use one and I never have (for energy work). I used to get hung up on "oh but all the books say I MUST have one!" and yet... I couldn't bring myself to. Maybe one day I will.

I voted you up as well. Totally agree. To me a knife is sharp and functional, an A-THE-MAY is neither, its just pretty and can be used in ritual. All my tools are multi-purpose and I don't need fancy names for them.

Too fancy for me. I also just use a knife. I'm not one for ceremony. My tools tend to be plain old, everyday items and neat bits and things I gather along the way. I'm just very practical. My tools are tools when make them tools (with intent and energy) and otherwise un-special or un-noticeable to the average person. I've always been for whatever blows your skirt up! :woot:

I took a sharp knife from the kitchen one day and since then it's what I use. I just call it a knife/blade, but I've always pronounced athame as a-(as in apple)-thuh-may.
