brigidsmoon
I am divulging my secrets to how I created my Yule Log Cake below. I hope you feel special, lol.:witch2: :cauldron: As far as the cake itself goes, the flavor is really up to you. You can use a box cake mix, and I did, or make it from scratch. Although, if you use chocolate frosting, you'll probably want to make something that goes with chocolate. Of course you could always start out with a buttercream frosting, and use food coloring to turn it brown, but I find that is just a pain in the ass. Firstly I baked two 9 X 13 cakes. I then cut and shaped them to my liking in order for me to create my log. For the icing I used chocolate as the base, and as I frosted the cake I tried to make the look of the icing bark like. To create detail I mixed chocolate and vanilla frosting to make a lighter color brown. I used this in the design of the bark, and to create the circular look of a cut log on the ends. I used toothpicks to do this. For the mushrooms I used marshmallows, and I cut them, and burnt them, and used water to shape them. I used food coloring in water to paint them with rusty brown and mossy green. To create the moss I mixed powdered sugar and water to a gooey consistency, and colored it with the mossy green I mixed. After placing the moss, I patted some powdered sugar into the top of it to give it some texture. I used marzipan to create my holly leaf and berries, and to create the knome. I mixed up the colors with my food coloring, and painted them with a clean paintbrush. I used a toothpick for the detail. For the dirt I simply sprinkled cocoa powder around the log, and a little on top of the mushrooms and the moss. Yes, it took a while to create, but it was worth it, and I quite enjoyed making this cake. It was very yummy too, and it was nice that every part of the cake was edible. Aurelia
Looks delicious! I love Yule log cakes but have never made my own. Did you roll the cakes up to create the log? Or stack and carve them?
