Saw an interesting, dark, bizarre movie called "Outcast" on netflix. It is an Irish movie, and has an interesting familiar take on magic. Anyone ever seen this one?

Could be, but they seem to be all UK actors and I'm not familiar with a lot of them. It was really good overall, intense, gritty as they say. A few plot holes that can be overlooked.

Sorry Off Topic, but have you ever seen " Waking Ned Divine " ? That is a good and very funny Irish movie. I recommend it highly.

Okais, having my curiosity piqued about this movie Outcast, we watched it last night. It was dark, and mystical. Main character Fergal is being protected by his Mother, who is alluded to being Witch, however there is a meeting with those who have Sidhe blood, and are seeking the descrution of Fergal, as he is a shape shifter.

I thought it was wonderful, and will watch it again today, just for clarity. It's rated R as there is some frontal nudity and some violence, so not for children.

You will witness the Mother, performing a ritual spell of protection as well as preforming a blocking spell, of her pursuers. Thanks Lynn for placing this out there, I'd never heard of it, and now I will never forget it. lol. I thought it was a great dark, mysterious, edgey movie. Even though there is a bit of a love story, but I overlooked that, but like I said, I'll watch it again today, to see if there is a connection between Fergal, and the love intererst. We watched it will closed caption words, as the broague was very pronounced and with the words, one could make a connection to the reference of the Sidhe.

You are VERY welcome Gypsy. I didn't catch the Sidhe references. But the spell casting shown had a very deep real feel to it that I really liked.

When Cathal goes to get those Tattoo's by " Faither " and then the pair of them go to see the " Laird ", referencing .. "hunting" on Sidhe lands. Cathal is a half-breed Sidhe, and wants to become full Sidhe, and by killing Fergal, he will. Fergal's mother was royalty in the Sidhe dynasty for the lack of a better word, she was suppose to inherit, but she got tricked by Cathal.

I really enjoyed this....... Lynn do you recall how she divined with the egg ? That really made me <GRIN>

I watched this one last night, but was distracted and didn't hae closed caption on so it was difficult to make out entire conversations sometimes.

I will watch again tonight, and see what I missed.

But I did really enjoy the magic and witxhery that was used in this film. It had a slightly authentic feeling about the protection, diving, blocking spells and rituals.

Yeah I loved the egg part as well! You see when they went to ask permission to hunt on the Laird's land, I interpreted it to mean that this was another "magical" group/family/band's territory and they were showing respect for that. Yes I did hear the part about her loosing her inheritance from her father, and that Cathal blamed her, but was reminded of her youth at the time and he actually was the one tricking her. So did they know her son was a shifter? For a long time I thought Cathal was a shifter too, and that's why the son was one.

But thinking about how they had said "Most of our people left a long time ago," I can see Sidhe in that, but also can interpret it to mean people of the olde wild magics.

Watched this yesterday. It's a film to watch a couple of times to pick up on everything. I liked the part when she used her own hair to make the brush. Can anyone give any info on the eggs for divining? That bit got lost on me. It does make a nice change to watch a film that shows witchcraft as more gritty and earthy rather than the Hollywood version.

For UK people who are thinking about watching it, James Nesbitt plays Cathal. Also Karen Gillan's in it briefly. Took me a while to realise the mother is the same actress who played the crazy sister in Game of Thrones (the one who was still breastfeeding).

OMG seriously Wych Elm, the actress who played Petronella's mother is that woman from Game of Thrones ??? Gads she's plays such gritty off-beat characters ! I really had to give the old camel lip of "eww" when I saw her nursing that 7 year old from Games. From what I picked up from the egg divination was when Mary crushed the first egg and nothing but dust was inside, showed her there were none pursuing her and Fergal, yet when she opened the 2nd egg, it was a double yolk. Noting to me that Mary found out that there were 2 pursuing her, remember how pissed she got ?

I may have to order this movie for my personal library, I really was facinated about the " Travelers " and the glimpses of magic.

Ooo! I got even a different take on that! What I got out of it was that when she cracked open the first egg and it was dust, that meant her son was still "dry" as far as being sexually active with anyone, and then the double yolk meant he was with someone---which is why she got so mad. She had told him not to. It was dangerous.

How keen is that?! Both could be very plausible indeed. I surely didn't make that observation ! Sometime, you are going to come across a saying here on the Forum, and I don't do it justice at all, so bear with me. It goes something like this :

" You can put 9 Witches in a room, and get 9 different takes on a spell or thought process ".. LoL ! How true.

I enjoyed this film a lot! It was great to see witchcraft being portrayed without all the Hollywood-isms.

The eggs baffled me a little too but I took the 2nd one, with the 2 yokes, to be telling her that 2 people were after her and not just Cathal. I haven't ever used eggs in my workings - is the movie delving into a practice and using it in the film, or is it totally made up with no basis outside of movie-fiction?

My husband watched it with me and he enjoyed it too. I put the subtitles on for him because the accents were too strong for him to get what was being said - but I think it had the opposite effect on me lol! I didn't pick up on any of the sidhe mentions, I figured that they had to ask the guy permission to hunt her there because it was his territory in Scotland .....but, did I imagine reading the word "Scotland" in the subtitles? Because everyone (even the police) spoke in Irish accents so I got a bit confused about locations then - was it all just in Ireland?

I liked the scene where she cooked up the pigeon for her son to eat, as well as the scene of her making the candle before fighting off the mental/magical attack. I thought both of those were done pretty well.

I think it definitely deserves another viewing!

James Nesbitt was great to see, I enjoy his work for the most part, but I didn't pick up that the mother was that lady from Game of Thrones! :o Wow! She made me pull an "ewww" face in Game of Thrones to CG hehehe!

Watched it. Loved it. For a while I was all 'the fuck is her deal?' at the mom, haha. Then at the end I was like OH!

great watch.

ETA a better review by request: The eggs she used to divine reminded me of a movie I saw long ago (cant remember the name now) where a woman who suspected a curse on her went to what looked like either a native american woman or a hispanic woman for help and when the lady cracked an egg open there was a spot of blood on the yolk. I'm not sure what that means but, yeah. I haven't read anything on using eggs in the craft and I'd certainly like to know more. I'd have to watch again to catch the ingredients but I thought the part where she made the candle and went into trance to keep Cathal from divining their whereabouts was kinda interesting. And how careless he was when leaving behind the bird and the mother was able to use his own 'sacrifice' against him was an interesting spin and a reminder to be careful with your tools as they are sacred and if the wrong person obtains them it can leave u vulnerable. I didn't, however, understand exactly how her cooking it and having her son eat it did anything, unless she was just trying to make good use of it but I'm assuming it was for more than that. Unfortunately I dont know much about the particular folklore and methods they used but the movie had a very dark and realistic feel which I liked. Also the painting of the symbols on the drywall and then painting over it to conceal it is a brilliant idea that I think I'd like to try. I liked that the movie felt real. There weren't a bunch of shiny sparkly props, they used what they had on them (literally - where Cathal consulted the dead using his own blood) which reminded me of the praticalness of the craft. I enjoyed it. The beast seemed kinda unrealistic but it was still interesting. I liked that he only hurt who it was necessary to hurt for his own survival.

Actually, I think this makes more sense now that I think about it... I guess it works both ways but I like this one lol.

Nice job LiliKate! Regarding the blood in the egg yolk. I've been told, that when there is blood in or on the yolk, that is a sign of a full moon cycle, likening itself to mensus for those who still have their monthlies. When I've cracked an egg just for cooking and see blood, I take that as a sign to watch for something to begin or end in 28 days. Even though I'm long past my monthlies, I still look at this as a symbol of a feminine nature, a cycle of sorts. That's just my opinion.

The part about her cooking the bird, and feeding it to Fergal, could represent the consuming of power, Fergal and Mary's pursuers could not use that particular power source again, remember when that other dude assisting Cathal when he whistled for a bird to come, no bird came to assist them ? Witche's can craft edible Poppets if they so choose to do. I've crafted baked bisquit flour poppets and hung them from trees for the birds and the Elements to leisurely consume one who had ill wishes towards me.

I totally thought that the painting of the protection symbols was brilliant too !

I'm rolling my eyes and going 'tsk' at this.

I think the very first bit where he's getting the tattoo is in Ireland. I still need to watch it again. The majority of the film is set in Edinburgh, Scotland. The guy they asked permission from was the Laird (Lord) and he was Scottish. Everyone on the housing estate was Scottish. The scenes that featured them meeting the Laird were filmed round the Royal Mile and the bit at the end where Petronella is begging is there too. It's fantastic. At the top end of the Royal Mile is Edinburgh Castle and there's great little cobbled roads leading off. I think there's about four or five little witchcraft shops. Even though it's touristy it still maintains a spooky atmosphere in places.

I'm going to have to drag out my Gaelic culture notes from uni and see what I can find about old Scottish traditions, if there's anything that featured in this film. The problem with anything Celtic is it gets over-romanticised so as you know, finding genuine fact is a bit tricky. A lot of Irish stuff didn't make it over to Scotland so Scotland has it's own unique cultural history. Ok, that's my day planned.

Thanks for offering this up Wych Elm. I was not sure if this all took place in Ireland either. But when I think of the " Travellers " in the movie, it could be plausible that they migrated back and forth from the two Islands.

When Petronella, in the final scenes is in that huge city and the Laird comes to her and beseeches her to go with him. What city do you think that is and what location. ?

Oh an on a side note about the subtitles, I have to have them, my American ears just can't quite formulize the dialoge without them, if the cast members are speaking in their native accents and tongues. I was in a pub in Edinburgh several times in my career, listening to sober Scotsman was hard enough, but a fellow, deep in his cup ? Holy shit. I wish I could of seen " balloons with words over their heads " to figure out what the hell they were saying. LoL !

Gypsy
