Oakbuchanan
Cheers for that MW, :) Just finished watching. When you say 40yrs+ and some things never change, are you referring to something specific in the footage or being more general about the overall picture it painted?...Thanks. Mountain Witch
Oak, referring to the overall picture ... distinguishing between 'white' and 'black' witches, lumping witchcraft & satanism together, etc. However, it was interesting in that I'd never seen/heard Doreen Valiente, Cecil Williamson or Alex & Maxine Sanders (who, BTW, are weird). Now I at least have faces to put on some of the names I read.
Cam
That was good. Thanks Mountain Witch for posting it. Pardon me for a minute before I post more. I have to go drink some animal blood, LOL. Okay, all finished in one gulp ;) Such Drama. I thought the priest would have made a great metal punker with the head throwing. Dam, I thought he was going to break his own neck and that of the person he was 'saving'. I have some old Man, Myth and Magic magazines around. One has an article on Sanders and his group. Why are they always naked?
Scylla
Why are they always naked? Some old-country witches think that clothing inhibits their witch-power from flowing freely. Others say that since some branches are fertility cults, they practice naked to express that. Some hold to the "Gospel of The Witches" where it says "And as a sign that you are truly free, you shall be naked in your rites." Some folks say only the coven leader/s should go nude, as a badge of office. Me? Don't notice any difference from buck naked to hooded-n-cloistered... except one's a lot warmer in the wintertime. Ha, ha, thanks :), but I meant it more as a rhetorical commentary - like put some clothes on sometimes eh.

My folks have the full set all in binders, pity I don't have the room as I'd have 'em all - wouldn't mind reading through them again.
Grymdycche
One has an article on Sanders and his group. Why are they always naked? In addition to what was explained upthread, it was kickstarted by Gerard Gardner. He was a practicing nudist. It was another element he brought into his creation of Wicca, and it was passed onto Alex Sander's brand of wicca, as Gardner had initiated him. That explains a lot.
Tana
It would be a very sorry-assed witch who couldn't manipulate power through a bit of clothing!

Gloogal
I thoroughly enjoyed the video-thanks for posting it Mountain Witch. Though at times it seems they looked around for the strangest characters they could find! The wobbly comb-over of the priest exorcising that poor man provided a few timely laughs, I have to admit! In between the usual press sensationalism (seems nothing changes there) there are some great snippets of info. Loved seeing Cecil Williamson and the Witchcraft Museum in the earlier days. Regarding nudity, I think it's important to be mindful I think of of what was going on at the time. Not long after the new found freedom of certain groups in the sixties, the casting off of old prohibitions, it's not surprising that perhaps many of the groups found working naked freeing, and it's always been distinctive from the staunch traditions of the church and their Sunday Best 'nudity is unnatural stance'. I agree with Tana and Jevne-I have never had any difficulty with performing magic with clothes on. Some of the places I find myself in need thermals and hobnail boots -anything else would be ridiculous!
