Stacey
So the Crime Investigation channel has started airing this three part series called 'American Occult'and I thought, hey! could be interesting........should have known better. Part one dealt with a guy who had a cult and thought he was the prophet of God, those who doubted him or left his group had to be killed for God. Part two dealt with a kid who was into Satanism, killed his parents, chopped his Dad's head off and used it in a Black Mass. The next episode dealth with a guy who thought he was a vampire, kidnapped a girl, drained her blood and almost killer her before she escaped. The second part of this episode dealth with a (yes you can laugh) a 'Satanic Sex Ring' - a pimp and some prostitutes made their own satanic circle and performed rituals and whatnot in the woods (as well as the occasional murder to silence would be informant members). So okay, I get that because it's on the Crime channel it involves murder but it boggles the mind that the Occult has been reduced to insane Christian fundies and wannabe Satanists. Doing a little googling I have discovered that the next episode is on a Nun who is murdered and some one killing women in a ritualistic fashion - it appears to be another devil worshipping group. Those who were prominent in the Occult world and learned scholars must be rolling in their graves...... Edited December 13, 2011 by Stacey
RavenFlyer
Unfortunately for most people not involved in occult practices automatically think devil, (as in Christian devil), worshipping, human sacrifice, orgies, etc. And so any show particularly about crime and murder is going to focus and sensationalize those aspects of rare sadistic murderers. This type of crime is actually called "satanic panic". It started being called this in the 1980s when some therapist's clients were coking out of hypnotic counseling sessions with over the type stories of being raised by satanists and witnessing horrific murders, orgies, etc. it later was found to be a huge mistake as the therapists were actually implanting these thoughts into their client's memories. It was despicable. However, most everyone in the public just got the horrific stories about secret satanistic cults that were preying on the unwary. And it still happens even today. But with that said, typed, there are some crazy people out there that take their ideologies into the extremes and actually think their practices are really evoking some supernatural baddie that will grant them everything they desire if they just butcher and slaughter tons of people. But clearly these individuals have less occult knowledge and power, but shit tons of sociopathic personality disorders.
Abhainn
Ratings would go down sharply if they made a show about real occult practices. Not to mention those who have the information wouldn't want to divulge their practices, anyway. I remember reading some uber-Christian fiction novels in college that used the hyped-up human and animal sacrifice mumbojumbo as examples of how the local witches were being used by the devil's minions to ruin the town. Same author that said very plainly that yoga is demonic and demons were waiting for the yoga-class participants to start their poses so they could get into their heads and lure them to hell, or to vote Democrat or whatever. No wonder people are creeped out. And afraid to ask what "occult" really entails. I know I was...
