The Secret Circle

Has anyone been watching The Secret Circle? It is taken from the series by L J Smith (I used to read her Nightworld series when I was a teen).

If anyone has not heard of or seen this show, here is a quick synopsis from Wikipedia:

"Cassie Blake is a sixteen-year old troubled teenager who is learning to adjust to her new life in Chance Harbor, after the tragic death of her mother, Amelia. Orphaned and deeply saddened, Cassie moves in with her warm and loving grandmother, Jane. After being enrolled into a local high school, Cassie comes into contact with five unlikely friends, Adam, Diana, mean girl Faye, her sidekick Melissa, and a brooding loner Nick. After her new friends explain that they are all descended from a powerful lineage of witches, and that they need her in order to complete their circle, Cassie refuses to believe them - until Adam shows her how to unlock her magical powers. However, it isn't until Cassie discovers a message from her mother in an old leather-bound book of spells that she understands her true and dangerous destiny. What Cassie and the others don't yet know is that darker powers are at play, powers that might be linked to the adults in the town, including Diana's father and Faye's mother - and that the death of Cassie's mother might not have been an accident."

I have to say I don't mind it. It's nice to watch a show where witches are the leads and not the backing track to vampire drama. I've not made up my mind yet as to whether I really like it or not, I'm cautiously optimistic for now. One thing I do find odd is that the 'demon' in one of the episodes is called Loa. Correct if I'm wrong as I'm not well versed in information on Voodoo but I thought Loa was a Voodoo Spirit?

I watched two episodes and stopped. I don't like it. Its another teenager drama about witchcraft and some of the characters are really irritating. The main actress reminds me of the blonde cheerleader from Heros. I rate this show 2 out of 5 stars just because it is about witches.

Well if you are looking for something thought provoking and meaningful, please don't watch Secret Circle!!

But if you can submit to the guilty pleasures of witch soft porn, then this might be for you!!

Personally, i'm not taking this show seriously. However, this is a portrayal of hereditary witchcraft sans neo-paganism. More like the Soprano's but with witches, different generations vying for power and i find that quite fun.

It's a portrayal of fantasy not reality and will most likely prompt a whole new generation of witch wannabe's but unlike the Willow Rosenberg use of "Wicca" the language and portrayal is more based around Trad witchery so i warn you all now that if this show becomes really popular, expect lots of interest on this forum!!!

I am enjoying it for what it is, it has some great special effects, some scary scenes and even a couple of actors with exceptional acting ability. I love the Grandma for instance, she makes me feel all warm and fuzzy.

When I seen the first previews, I thought it might be "fun" to watch, but then, brfore the show aired they aired more previews & that is all it took for me to decide. Afterall, it is geared toward the teens & IMO gives the wrong impression of TW.

I love fantasy shows. I could watch Merlin marathons forever. Fantasy is good, but can not be mixed with the perception of reality.

Never watched an episode, but my first impression found it ridiculous. Just sayin..... :flyaway:

So I have watched every episode of this show up to the current episode. The first 4-5 episodes are rather bad. However, I like the direction this show has take. Since they have shown Cassie (the main blonde) to be part of an ancient bloodline that is cursed with dark magic. She is learning how to control her power, and it has taken on some interesting twists recently. Two episodes ago another witch from a different circle convinces Cassie she can remove the dark magic from her, but ends up casting a spell in order to kill Cassie.

I think once the plot finally found its footing that the show has really gotten better. Of course it's a little childish and goofy, but this is the CW home of shows for teenagers. But it is better than most teenage shows like 90210, and gossip girl, or one tree hill. It's not going to be everyone's cup o' tea, but I enjoy it as fluff vegetation watching.

I dunno, the last one seemed not too bad to me...just have to get past the teenage youth part, but there are adult witches in the series as well. At least they have male witches, as well as female, with no gender inequality.

A re-run, marathon of this show has been on the last few days. I left it on the television, while grading papers, which means I was only half paying attention. The show is what it is, silly teenage melodrama with a magical-ish flair. Not good, but not horrible. Of all the things that I could have found annoying about it, though, the thing that struck me was the way that Cassie said "dark magic". She says "my dark magic", as if she is saying "my diarrhea" or "my gonorrhea". I know she is supposed to be expressing how dangerous and tempting dark magic allegedly is, but when she kept saying it like that, I giggled. Made me think of little kids on the playground, running around saying "poopy" and "booby" and thinking they were being all dirty and naughty.

I agree with RavenFlyer fluff fantasy can be fun, remember that awful Eastwick ? We real witches can't watch this kind of media and take it seriously. We have our salt so we snear and glare at some things tell they catch fire, but goopy fluff can be fun.

I have watched the show I keep trying to get past the begining when it was t.v.p.g-core witch porn and drama, The show actually got a bit more strange I think the people that wrote this stuff are out there. Somehow an amorphus jellyfish turns into a crystal skull ? I still don't get it. I did fall in love with the show's villans, I guess I loved watching sparkling teenage witch hunters.

The Witches of Eastwick? I LOVED that. Predominantly because Jack Nicholson is the second sexiest man ever in my opinion (the first one being Oliver Reed in his hey day. Sexy!) Nobody does menacing or sinister like Jack Nicholson. In fact, you've inspired me, I think I'll go watch it right now.....

I actually meant Eastwick (2009) the T.V. show, I did enjoy the movie.

I'd give it a chance. I recently rewatched it all in Netflix and enjoyed it a lot more than I had originally.

Like I said previously give it a few episodes to find its footing and then the story gets a lot better. Once they introduce a specific character the show gets a lot better.
