Sparrow
Came across this little book in the charity shop the other day and it's very good. I have several books on aromatherapy and in less than 50 pages it beats them all hands down! It has a brief history of the use of aroma in healing, ways of using essential oils, followed by very comprehensive correspondence tables of what each oil can be used for, as well as an index for both psychological and physical conditions which can be addressed using aromatherapy, and with which oils. I know I am going to be making a lot of use of this book! You can get it new on Amazon for £1.99, the ISBN is 0951772309. Sparrow
Nineheart
Wow that's really weird, but I love the synchronicity of this forum! I was just thinking about getting into aromatherapy, so thanks for the book recommendation. Is there any brands of essential oils you prefer which you wouldn't mind sharing? Also I've just realised that I was eyeing up this book in Holland and Barrett a few days ago, I must get it next time I'm in town.
Sparrow
Hello again Nine! In my experience any brand is fine as long as it is 100% pure essential oil. I have one from baldwins on the way, my first from them so if I'm pleased with the quality I will let you know. I've never noticed much difference between organic and non-organic oils however. If you're going to get lavender (I recommend you do, it is by far the most versatile), be careful not to pick up spike lavender by mistake as they aren't the same thing. Spike lavender is more pungent, more stimulating than relaxing. Hope that info is useful. Aromatherapy is the practise I've been using the longest, it was introduced to me by my grandparents when I was little :) Sparrow
Nineheart
Thanks for the tip about lavender, I'll be sure to look out for it. Don't forget to give me a review of the Baldwins oil. It'd be great to have a discussion on aromatherapy in chat when we have the time, I look forward to hearing more about it from you :D.
Jevne
I make my own oils and such for various purposes; however, I am not well versed in aromatherapy as a practice. Does the book happen to reference any specific Craft-related (i.e. magical) uses? If not, have you come across a book or other reference that does? :)J
Sparrow
I haven't seen a book specifically related to magical uses I'm afraid. But, many of the uses of essential oils in aromatherapy hark back to ancient Greece, Rome and Egypt. Frankincense and myrrh in particular are repeatedly cited as having "ancient religious uses" so there is probably something in that. I have also frequently seen mention of using oil in a burner for scent instead of incense for ritual if one has allergies to commercial incense. Finally, essential oils are simply pure extracts from the plant, so a magical use for a particular herb would be the same in the oil. Remember that the oils are highly potent and concentrated, so you could probably use them to great effect that way! Generally I've noticed that the magical uses for a herb correspond to their medicinal uses, eg rosemary can be used for cleansing, and is an astringent. Is this always the case or are there any notable exceptions? Hope this helps! Sparrow
Sparrow
Jevne, While I was looking for something else I came across a book called "Magical Aromatherapy" by Scott Cunningham on Amazon. I had a peek with Look Inside and it doesn't look like my cup of tea, but you might be able to find something useful :) Sparrow

Probably not my cup of tea, either, but I'll take a look. Thank you.
