I've always had mild psychic abilities and from my earliest memories I recall OOB travel, guiding voices, telepathy, precognition, telekinesis. I naively thought, as a kid, that everybody was the same and so it was ordinary & totally took it for granted. I don't think my parents even knew because we just never talked about it...like discussing the air you breathe. I had many OOB traveling dreams in which my "friend" took me to large, crowded lectures as well as to visit individual people who just talked casually of these things. I face-planted into mediumship when I was 17 then found out my parents were totally disbelieving. Their reaction hurt &'confused me so again was never discussed at home thereafter. I worked to develop the trance ability when i went to college and met a professor who was a trained medium & had been taught directly by Eileen Garrett (sort of like a lineage). Some of us students formed a psychic study group. Through trance-channeling, I was taught visualization to cause change. That was back in the 1970's & only in the 90's did I find Scott Cunningham's "Solitary Wicca". That led to other books on witchcraft, so i learned "witchcraft" was what others called the things I do. I never think of myself as a witch & it's not a religion for me. This is just the way I am, and how I function. So, I'm in the camp with other worldly teachers, but also in the experiment-&- learn-it category.

I'm also in the camp with other worldly teachers. Communication with spirits is one of my weaker talents, but even then when I started doing ancestor work, I got responses. And those responses have definite opinions of things I should know.

Yep, otherworldly teachers all the way. Most of my teachers ( all of the best ones ) have been of this sort.

A while ago I experienced some troubles and somebody suggested that I contact an ancestral spirit for guidance. Now this is not something I have much experience in and I've avoided it for a long time. Well I made contact with my paternal grandmother and things went well for a while. She had very clear ideas on what I should and shouldn't be doing. Became extremely bitchy when we had different opinions, after which I decided no more contact.
I did learn a lot from her, and have been considering apologising and trying again. I am starting to see the value of an otherworldly teacher, although I screwed up with mine.

I've always felt that there were spirits around me. When I was around seven I felt like I was being watched but that they were waiting for something. When I was 25, my life fell aprt and a experienced a calling. I had an OBE, an NDE. I could astral travel. I began to see spirits then and now have relationships with a few. One does specifically teach and help me with witchcraft. I've only really just accepted all of this in the past year or so. So, I'm still finding my way.

Also, I've read that as a part of a witch calling or a shamanic calling( there seems to be some overlap there) that the witchlet spends a lot of time alone and isn't properly enculturated. That was definitely my experience. My mother became very depressed and I was on my own.  I would think that if this is common among witches that not only do we have spirit teachers but that theses spirits may influence our lives and those around us in a profound way from very early on.

I would bet you'll have other chances. If not with that particular ancestor, perhaps with others.

She's the only one trustworthy enough (not such nice family!) so yes I will have to sort it out. It's just that we are both very stubborn. When she was alive she was quite an intimidating person and I would never have dared to argue with her the way I did. Guess I will have to remember that, after all she hasn't changed. I'm learning a bit every day.

I found progress to be reeeeally slow for me until I connected to a spirit whose help has been beyond valuable. He teaches me things I never even thought to know about or consider. In fact, he reached out to me while I was doing tarot one night and not really trying to reach out to that realm. I have an ancestor that doesn't like to let very many other spirits near, so my work with non-ancestral spirits is always a challenge--except for this one.

And the only stuff my ancestral spirits seem interested in helping with is business and finance, lol. Some commentary about my lifestyle, usually unsolicited...Anyone else get this type of help from the other side?

I haven't learned nearly as much from living people or books.

I wish an ancestor would help me out with business and finance, lol! I think they were all poor!

Haha. I appreciate it now, but I was pretty disappointed when I was younger and totally sure that I would neeeever start my own business. I was pretty underwhelmed by the mundane nature of the communication, I was so sure that there'd be some big, mystical messages or something but nope. More like, "you disrespect the art of crafting beer when you drink a pint as fast as you did last night." Thanks, grandpa, I will begrudgingly accept that you might have a point there but why can't you tell me what it's like on the other side instead?

Lol, clearly a well crafted brew > the great mystery of the afterlife. Clearly your grandfather was a man of priorities; I've got respect for that.

I loved reading this topic, thank you "M" for such an interesting discussion, for myself i was a very quite and alone child most happy out in nature or when my father would teach me about the creatures of the wild. My siblings are so different to me, more normal if there is such a thing. I didn't even think along the psychic lines then had no idea as to what was coming but when i had my first marriage there came with it quite a lot of trauma and my father suddenly died, in the 90's and around 2000 i started to question everything i was taught especially being raised a christian catholic.

As soon as i asked the Divine for answers the flood gates opened and soon after i went to a moot in Avebury and met some lovely people, the first Pagans i had ever had any contact with. (i consider myself one now) As time went on i experienced Astral travel and journeying and this was all new to me and somewhat scary. eventually over the years i have worked through the fear and trauma from the past, left the marriage and started anew. I am now most delighted to find i am able to experience the spirit world in such interesting ways and long for more adventures and knowledge as i grow, i'll be 60 next year and it seems as i am now in the Crone stage of my life i am seeing so much deeper and finding answers, it has taken a long time but reading all your posts is also answering some of my questions. I travel most nights and go with my feelings, if a spirit is maelevolent (spellcheck) i can usually tell. The Fae come to me when i dream or travel sometimes and this seems to be the path that is opening up before me a more shamanic way of the craft.

A question about portals, if you open one up will you be able to control what comes through? I wouldn't have though this should be done by someone that is not experienced in these ways, just a thought.

I wouldn't know exactly how to control what comes thru but i can put on an attitude and bristle "go back where you came from" as if I knew. i figure if we open doors without asking what's on the other side we take what we get. However, it feels like there are ways and means to open specific doors to identified areas with the proper ID and key. In dreams, I've traveled with my guide along energy flows that go like well traveled paths directly to specific teachers.

This has been an interesting read, I learned a few things and perspectives I wasn't aware of before.

I'm not sure about otherworldly teachers, I've not been too interested in reaching out to anyone out there, and have mostly just let my own curiosity and judgment guide me. I also lack a belief in the afterlife, at least not by any conventional means. I do believe that we come from something, and we waste nothing at the atomic level when we die. I wouldn't be surprised if enough familiar atoms rejoin in a human body again, that we have our reincarnation, and if enough atoms and energy hang around together after they've disbanded and left their meaty arrangements, that we have our spirits and ghosts.

I haven't had any run-ins with spirits that I can recall, the closest I've come to experiencing the supernatural is predicting someone's death or some major accidents, predicting small events for the day, or that strong feeling of 'deja-vu' when you know you're only experiencing something for the 'first time'.

That I don't seek out an 'otherworldly' teacher doesn't impact my path, though. Maybe someday, but at the moment, I feel no need for it. We as witches, living and breathing, are so very powerful in and of our own right.

Thanks Michele for sharing so much info about the compass! Very helpful!

I was born as I am now but I wouldn't say I was born a witch. I loved nature, was sensitive to energy, could sense and sometimes see entities, etc. but it wasn't until I was in my late 20's and finally grew beyond the constraints of conservative christianity that I really started exploring who I was and what natural abilities I had. Slowly I learned and grew, I opened up more and more. My teachers were Otherworldly.  In time I came to understand and embrace all of who and what I was and at this time I resonated with "witch". I came to consider myself a witch, I grew into it. Was I a witch as a child? Was I born a witch? I do not feel that I was. I do feel that I was born with the attributes, abilities and nature that gave me the potential to grow into a witch.

My teachers are varied, some come and teach a lesson or two and are gone, others have been with me from the beginning.

My greatest teachers came to me, they were already there with me doing their best to communicate with me and guide me all through my life. I have asked for certain teachers to come for certain reason for a time and usually they did, or one of my teachers has called in a "specialist" so to say for a certain lesson or work.

Great thread! I really enjoyed reading through it.
