I was in a crowded building the other day and I felt that strong feeling one gets when they are being watched. I looked up and instantly made eye contact with a man I'd never seen before. I felt drawn to his stare, almost like I knew him - but I knew I didn't (and no, it wasn't a sexual attraction thing). Even though we were surrounded by others, they all seemed to disappear. It felt for a moment like I was alone with this man. In my head I heard a voice that said "witch." This experience only lasted for a moment. Then as quickly as it all happened, it ended. Reality set back in and the man disappeared into the crowd.

The last time this happened to me I was actively exploring witchcraft (prior to being disillusioned by wicca - at the time, the only material I could get my hands on was wiccan). Once I determined wicca wasn't for me I I kept witchcraft filed away in a mental drawer for years. During that time I had no experiences like this, but now that I have rededicated myself to my practice of witchcraft (sans wicca), I seem to be more open to experiences like this.

So my question to all of you who care to respond is whether we are innately drawn to eachother? Can we tell when we are in the company of another witch? Thank you all in advance for your input. This is my first post after the Introduction Post, I can't wait to get to know everyone!

I think witches can sense other witches, speaking from my experiences. That's not to say that a highly skilled one couldn't prevent another from sensing them, but generally... yes.

Descended from pioneers who came West from the Southern Appalachians at the beginning of the nineteenth century, they made little contact with the outer world for more than a hundred years. They seem like foreigners to the average urban American, but nearly all of them come of British stock, and many families have lived in America since colonial days. Their material heirlooms are few, but like all isolated illiterates they have clung to the old songs and obsolete sayings and outworn customs of their ancestors." Ozark Magic and Folklore

I think this was mentioned, but I can't remember the thread and I can't find it searching under "smelling witches" or "sensing witches" but maybe someone else who is more technically inclined than I can. Off the top of my head I can't remember ever sensing power from someone in the extreme, but I did once find someone's eyes in a crowd that I felt them, and I ended up dating the person for several years, lol. But I do beieve many witches can sense other ones. There is a saying that goes "power knows power."

I'm sensitive to energy in general, and I have been able to sense people with a higher field of energy than the average Joe (in this case, witches).

For example, I arranged to meet up with my current coven leader (not having met her before that date, and never seeing a picture of her, or any other indication of how she would look), and out of the crowd of people in the lobby of the restaurant, I was able to pick her out. She wasn't dressed 'witchy' or any other indication that she was one, but I knew who she was. For one, she had a weird familiarity about her. She didn't feel like a stranger, but somebody I have met before and was well-acquainted with. But I'm very shy usually, so it took me a bit to go up and ask if she was the same person who sent me the e-mail. Surely enough, it was her.

So yes, I believe that I (and many witches) have some sort of way to sense others. Though I have talked with witches who say they have never been able to tell whether someone was a witch or not, and the realization of that took them by surprise.

I guess it depends on the witch. We all have different strengths. :)

I think it might have been in the private section for some reason, but can't be positive.

I can usually tell when I have another witch around me. I also tend to pick out people to be friends with who have are sensitive to spirits and a few other gifts. It could just be people are drawn to those like them, but then again, what you put out there you tend to attract back.

I've met some witches/practitioners that have incredibly intense energy, so I would have to say...yes. It's not something that I've purposefully tried to do outside of a particular working, but I'd have to say yes to witchy radar.

Generally, yes. I can sense power, unless the person is purposely blocking. And even then, I know they are blocking me, which in and of itself is a sign of their possible connection to the Craft or some other magical path.

Spinney,
I fail to see what Aloe linked to in her post.
Please clarify this as i do not wish to inadvertently link or direct someone somewhere they are not "supposed" to be.

The "eyes" have it.
For me the only time i have "felt" the presence of a hitherto fore unknown witch is in the gaze felt across a room of people, we all posses this latent ability I beleive.

My post was deleted, I had posted a link to the thread in private chat that Michelle was asking about.

Ohh, I think you're onto something!

This happened a few times to me back in High School. I would end up choosing to sit beside and immediately chatting people up whom I later found out were witches, had psychic ability or were even pagan. It's a strange thing, but it works <3

Oh, yes I believe we can. My mentor knew it when she first met me when I was a kid. Then I've felt others around me over the years. Some try to hide it, not very well might I add, and others just let it out there for all. I've found that it's not just witches, but people who have a powerful spirit, aura, or what have you I can sense. I guess I'm in tune with the fields they put off. I can also sense shadow beings to and know when they are around and also, within a day or two, even tell you if one has been there and exactly where. I've been told I'm empathic, so maybe some of that comes from that ability.

I only sense real power not proclaimed power, so from most people, I get nothing.

Power, yes, but it's rare. I don't think it's wise to assume that power sensed is necessarily witchy power, though.

I agree.  I think we touched on this subject in one of the other threads on sensing power.
