What is your favourite deck?

Recommended Posts

My Thoth deck is the smaller one as well. People say the imagery is much better on the larger decks, but I don't think it's much different at all, and it's a dream to be able to shuffle with.

I love Mildred Payne's The Black Enchantment Oracle, but I don't have one yet. I have Rider Waite and Katina decks. Images on Katina are really fascinating I think, but Katina is only used for love matters. It was first made by a Greek woman called Katina who was an Ottoman Empire citizen. The deck carries the traces of that period. I wish I could upload images here.

I made a replica Mildred Payne Deck plus all the additions to it.  It was quite a project, it looked deceptively simple to do, so a couple of friends and I said lets make our own.  I do a reading every day with it.

My first deck is the Robin Wood deck, mainly because I really liked the illustrations.  I just picked up a Wildwood Tarot, and will be learning to work with it this year to see if I like it as well.

My favourite to flick through is the Shadowscapes deck - it’s just so aesthetically pleasing.

Favourite to work with is my oldest deck, called the Girlfriend’s Tarot. It’s a bit kitch and teen-witchy, but it’s been with me for 15 years and knows me inside out.

I like  the look of the Oracle cards, I have some Rune Oracle cards, I bought them because I thought that I would learn the Runes quicker, however I am no farther forward now than I was then.

I recently got the White Light Oracle from a subscription box that I really love! I connected instantly with it, and I hadn't used oracle cards before. I've got quite a few sets of Tarot cards, but for some reason, tarot doesn't resonate with me as much as Runes and Ogham fews do.

I've got some Rune cards, which I love! And quite a few sets of runes as well.

I also just got my first set of Ogham fews, as well as a sort of deck with the fews on it, and I'm slowly exploring these!

I've considered trying to make my own Tarot deck, but honestly, I have no idea where to start. There are so many different cards (sheer number wise) and it's a bit daunting to me.

My favorite is Tarot of the Cat People.  It was my first deck, and it still resonates with me.

I did a replica oracle deck  of the Mildred Payne Oracle, just because the pictures were childlike in style.   They were made from brown postal tags, I just cut off the part with the hole.  These four cards are of my own design, I think I posted the entire deck on my Art Post.  Art of Onyx.  As you can see there are 88 cards, plus you have to do 88 backs of the cards.  I used a corner stamp and then stippled the edges with stamping ink, in a brown color.

Onyx, you're a fountain of cool information. Thank you, I'll take a look when I'm not busy.

Divination:

Thoth (i trimmed it to the images and edge it) It was impossible for me to read it before because of the distracting borders and such small images with so much detail in them.

Fantastical Creatures

Fountain

Medieval Scapini

Classics:

Minchiate Etruria from Lo Scarabeo  (it's not typical but i just love it. I also do not use it for divination because i don't want to ruin it's mint condition).

Vacchetta Tarot (from Lo Scarabeo. I trimmed it to the images and edge it, made the box to match aswell)

Venetian Tarot (Gumppenberg Milano) a facsimile from the Spanish Card Museum in Álava (this one used fir divination - Marsella style).

Cary-Yale Visconti (nor for divination because it's not complete although Scapini did paint the missing ones but i find they are very different and i notice it)

My favorite "art deck" is a newer one, the Pagan Otherworlds. It's stunning, and very potent, as it tries to synthesize different historical interpretations of the Tarot - you can divine with anything but it's nice to work with a well thought-out tool.

I'm waiting for a Joanna Newsom deck I supported on Kickstarter to arrive, I'm incredibly excited. You can see the artist's work here.

Otherwise imo you can't beat the Marseille.

Have you tried the lenormand? I generally I prefer oracle decks to tarot. I’ve also considered working with the Santa Muerte tarot, such beautiful imagery. And it’s my lineage lol.

My latest deck is" The Wisdom of Avalon," oracle cards, by Colette Baron-Reid.   It embraces a type of  Celtic, King Arthur Mythos.  I quite like them.

I have never tried the Lenormand deck, but I know some people who love it and it is their go to deck.

I've never tried Lenormand, something else always catches my eye before I can dive in but it's definitely a system I want to study at some point! Lenormand is such an interesting character, truly an inspiration for any cartomancer imo

It’s nice getting to know the lenormand, it’s a good primer for oracles in general. Learning to interpret the language is a fun process, so I’d definitely start with it because there’s good books out in lenormand reading that will really teach you to read oracle card systems in general. Such as The Complete Lenormand Oracle Handbook.

Reading through the entire thread, I only saw one mention of my personal favorite deck, the Herbal Tarot. A RWS clone with plants. My first deck was the Scapini. I rarely work with it because it seems like a jerk. The artwork is appealing, and the humor included in the cards is clever, but the personality is lacking in tact, so to speak. Whereas the Herbal Tarot might say something like “you seem to be struggling to control your anger”, the Scapini might say “you are a bitch, you have always been a bitch, and you will always be a bitch”. ???? I have the CBD Marseille, and one of these days will dive into learning how to read with it.

Lol! And yet those are the exact reasons I will always love my Scapini deck.

@JessicaB   LOL, love it!

I agree with @Duchess The Scapini sounds like my kind of Tarot Deck.

I have zero patience and time for "might be, could be, maybe, seems like, it possibly could be"...... ...forget the beat around the bush readings...just tell me like it is, the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth!!! LOL

So, I've recently come to the observation that Thoth is a tricky beaky bastard, and I'm not afraid to say it!!! It thoroughly advised me, in my own readings AND across the board by the study group I was in that to rekindle my relationship with my ex-husband after 3 years was the Best Idea Ever, and good graces, I am a bit shocked that I made it out again alive this time. In general, I've been finding that I've been getting mixed and inappropriate reads from Tarot, various decks too... I think it may be possible that I've sort of become dependent on consulting cards, subconsciously looking for certain answers, or what...My Elder friend who reads Tarot (but not Thoth) confirmed that the Gods can and will absolutely trick a witch so that we learn a lesson, and Thoth is, of course, Mercury, and a known Trickster. I even cast off the deck into the bushes, that that Elder gave me in a desperate instance with Said Husband of Yore, and then couldn't find it afterward, I think because I was so pissed that it led me down the road I was asking about, even though certainly it knew what was going to happen. So, Hard lessons. I'm being forced to cultivate a much healthier respect for the Tarot lately, in multiple senses... awe, boundaries, skepticism, and awareness of that the consciousness behind the deck makes a huge difference. In the case of Thoth, the consciousness being a Deity, realizing that the lessons involved are from a God and can and may humble me.

Anyway, Thoth has Thoroughly Flummoxed me. I have all of my study books out still, actually, so the deck as a concept IS calling to me, but, man oh man... it's no joke. I feel as though I really want to investigate some less "God Smack You On the Head like You're Dead"/"Trick You Cos That's My Job Fool", and more compassionate, motherly decks because now I am seeing why Thoth scares the shit out of so many Witches. LOL. I don't trust it right now, TBH... not for consulting readings, anyway... I think I'm going to keep it as a back burner study course rather than consulting it for answers for a while. I was warned about Thoth as a God being difficult, and now I see why.

I was suggested the Deviant Moon in New Orleans, but didn't get it... I went for another Thoth instead, like a crazy person.

The twisted path is long and winding, indeed.

The golden tarot by Kat Black is pretty gentle and sweet, but also truthful.
