The Mythology of Cats

This book has opened my eyes to the history of cats and as the title says the myths and lore behind our moon eyed friends. It speaks about the breeds of cat there are and what in history has been said about them. For example, it speaks of the Egyptian Mau as "The Goddess cat ", in early Egyptian culture the felines role was quite superior for many reasons. The book goes on in detail to explain. There are particular breeds that are considered "Caretakers", "The household cat", "The Literary Cat", "Travel Cat", the " Immortal Cat" and what has been believed about cats. If you are interested in learning a little history and all the myths behind different cat breeds this book does a superb job.

A cat-lover friend said that she found this book to be too one-sided and not necessarily an in depth evaluation of the true mythology of cats or the various species of cats. I do not own the book; however, I'm curious what you think of the interpretation of the book as too cutsie and/or as somehow lacking in depth.

If your looking for an in depth study of cat lore it probably isn't the book to read. This book is a fun and gives a light hearted overview and yes it is obvious that the writers have their own perspectives on cats. It is written by a couple that loves cats. It is definitely not academic or something that one should read if you are looking for in depth or formal study cat mythology. It was a good intro for me since I am not familiar with cat breeds and their mythology. In my perspective, it shared enough info for me to get a general understanding and go on to learn more but I wouldn't recommend it if you are already someone that knows a great deal about cats and/or looking for something really focused on cat breeds, mythology and so on.
