CelticGypsy
One of the Cat's brought this baby squirrel home, poor thing was so frightened. I rescued him from the jaws of death ! I put him inside of a hollow oak stump so he could compose himself, he curled up in the glove and took a nap. I made my husband guard the stump. He's now living inside one of our cat carrier's for his own protection. In time, when no one is looking I'll release him back into the wild. He's just too little yet. He will let me hold him, but I'm wearing leather gloves. He's taken to my gloves now, and has to have them in the carrier with him. He drinks water from a jar lid, and birdseed ( sunflower seeds ) and really likes Planters Low Salt Peanuts. He grunts like a pig. I know if I let him go now, he will be fair game for anything. I'm going to wait and see if he gets bigger or what Fate has for him. In the mean time, I will be taking requests for a name for this little fella. He is a little boy squirrel. Gramayr
What a cute little fella (reminds me of the time I rescued a collared dove from drowning - she looked a right state but survived and became a friend). You never know when you release him he might come back As for names, what about 'Rusty' 'Acorn' or 'Nutty' (sorry, couldn't resist adding some piccies of our little dovelet)
Gramayr
Ratatoskr, Ratatat for short! He's the Squirrel that runs up and down Yggdrasil in Norse Mythos. That's a good name, or maybe toskr for short? (good name for the squirrel that lives in my inlaws garden as it has a hairless rat like tail)

You never know when you release him he might come back  I never thought of that... I'll have to release him in the deep forest, and away from my home, he wouldn't last a day here. In the forest he'll have covering, and possibly find a girlfriend, and do what squirrels do. It's funny when the Eagles moved to the Lake back in 2005, there was a high rate of squirrels and rabbits disappearing. Now the squirrels I think are pre-disposed not to leave the trees for too long. Especially where homes and lawns are. lol. No canopies ! But in the deep forest that surrounds, he'll get adjusted to that, and have ample coverage.:crossfingers: As for names, what about 'Rusty' 'Acorn' or 'Nutty' (sorry, couldn't resist adding some piccies of our little dovelet) Oh heaven's no, she precious, I'm delighted with the photos.:embarrased: Does she still come to your home ? Regards,Gypsy Sadly no, she hung around for quite a while following me around the garden (even hopping onto my hand) then she left. She returned when she knew her time was at an end, she made it to our garden only to collapse and she passed away as I was holding her. Sad, but happy memories. Oh my. Well we have a neighbor, who traps and eats squirrels, so I'll have to take this little guy and put him in the opposite side and away from him. When we moved up here, I was comming down the dirt road, we live on dead end street, and are the last house. I noticed that some of the squirrels had bright orange backs, I thought, what the hell, is this what Northern squirrels look like ? I was informed that this gentleman, traps the squirrels, he paints the females' back and releases them so they can reproduce. The males he eats, as to control the production of male/female ratio. I have permission to the forest by the owner, and the other owner who's forest abutts up to the one behind the house, I have permission to be in that one too. Together there is 300 acres of forest that surround my little speck of the earth. I'll be taking the little fella to a place that he will find pleasing and not be humanly harmed. I'll just have to trust Fate. Regards,Gypsy

CelticGypsy
Well I've had little Maxwell for just about 2 weeks now. He recognizes that. He's very friendly, loves to be petted, and talked to, and has gotten bigger. I've let him out of the cat carrier, but he's frightened as he is so exposed and would rather hide in my lap. Or hide under my hair. Well today Max had a big adventure, he climbed a large Jack Pine and skittled about the branches. He's come down just to make sure I was there, nuzzle my finger-tips and get petted, and scamper back up the tree. I got a ladder, and placed the carrier in the boughs of the trees, to intice him back into it, just for his safety and to take a nap. He was up in the tree for such a long time. He did, after he saw I had grapes and cheeze. He took a long nap under his blanket, and after that he wanted back out, so out the ladder came, up the tree went the carrier and Max. Since he's identified the carrier as his den, I'm hoping that he will rest there tonight, and some other squirrel will come along and make friends with him. He needs to learn how to forage, and I'm concerned. I want him to know that he really finds out that he is a squirrel, and not my pet. But untill he becomes "wild" again, I will continue to feed him and give him cream. I'm going to leave him out over night in the safety of the tree and his little den, and see if he's there in the morning. He's safe and protected, trust me. lol. CelticGypsy
How's Max coming along CG? Max is still with us, Himself took down the cat carrier, and put up an old Mail box. Max likes his new digs, and sleeps in there every night with his blanket. He's all over the place during the day, I don't know where that squirrel goes, but he's here every night on the railing wanting his supper. He's gotten bigger, and honestly I'm surprised with all my feline predators that he hasn't come to any harm. They are intregued with him naturally, but that's about it. Other squirrels they chase, but Max they just watch. lol. go figure. I want him to find a girlfriend and make nice with her. He's quite handsome in my opinion, but he's very comical and expressive. Last night, he was acting like a ninja with a stick. Sommersaults and everything. I've never seen a squirrel behave the way Max does. lol.:cuckoo: Regards,Gypsy
