The Witch Of Portobello

The Witch of Portobello by Paulo Coelho focuses on a woman named Athena. Athena is born to a Roma woman and adopted by a middle eastern couple. She begins to explore trance through dance, and becomes a teacher of esoteric knowledge.

The story isn't told in a normal fashion, but in short conversations with people who knew Athena. So as you read the book you get to see her through everyone else's eyes.

I have to say it is a remarkable book. Coelho touches on ideas and conversations we have had here. The book is amazing. The tradition that Athena teaches and practices is never named, but the word witchcraft is used occasionally.

I really really really think everyone should read this book.

if you have a kindle you can download it for only $4.99!!! That may be the cost of the downloadable version for Nook as well, but i can't verify that as I have a kindle.

Hey - isn't this the fellow who wrote the Alchemist? LOVED that book. I will search abotu on the Kindle and see if I can find it .His way of writing is most unusual, almost like a young readers' book, but so totally NOT a young readers book, lol. (I'm assuming it's the some author.)

Yes he did write The Alchemist. I haven't read that one yet. But I did read his book Veronika Decides to Die. And that one was really good. And I am almost finished with The Witch of Portobello, and I love this book.

Don't have a kindle or nook thing, but I did read the Alchemist and loved that.  I'll jot this book down too, for winter reading.

Would love to see a review on it too !

Gypsy

The Alchemist is a very good book.. Very inspiring.  Its right up there with The Giver  and with The Celestine Prophesy as one of the most inspiring books I have read.

Finally got around to reading it. Bear in mind that I've never read any of his other books but I understand they're written in an allegorical fashion ...

I wasn't all that impressed.

I was 78% through the book before the reason for the title is revealed - and frankly, it's derogatory. Athena is on a journey to "find herself" which a lot of folks are. She manages to unlock something in herself and becomes a seer. That's not exactly a witch in my dictionary.

That said, he gives some good ideas of how to learn to go into trance if you don't already know how. It's also a somewhat cautionary tale if you discover "special" abilities.

Although an interesting read, I'm not into self-help books and this is one. I think the point was to show that with enough dedication, you can find who you really are, what your path in life is, all that.  2/5 stars. I deleted it off my Kindle as I know I won't read it again.
