Ora
Some may disagree with me on this but I think you are better off finding a nice quiet place to sit in either a thunderstorm, gentle rain, a meadow, some sort of parkish area, on a beach, etc. I think the most important part of this whole witch thing is feeling the pulse of the Earth and all that grows from it, including ourselves. Once you can feel the energy from the Earth and the associated energy, then you have tapped into something really powerful that can be bent and shaped. I have never read anything that furthered my own skills as a Witch, most of it has been whispered into my ear. There are a lot of good books listed here and there give a lot of inciteful information and interesting historical data. In Wicca you can read your way through to feeling like you know it all. In Traditional Witchcraft, all the good stuff hasn't been written down. You are on your own journey and I am not sure you can use other people's words and experiences to begin to cover what your own experiences will be. Others may disagree...:)

Cairelle
Wicca's got all kinds of books to delve into... they can tell you all about which candle to use on which day in whatever color, tell you about the "burning times", tell you about the "ancient practice" of your newfound religion... and I think most of it is a bunch of bullshit created to cater to people who can't think for themselves. If you want info on Wicca, this really isn't the place. In regard to witchcraft, however, you need to look within, that's the place to start. You need to create your own brand of witchiness (it's the best kind) and you can pull from the knowledge of others, but it takes time. Don't rush it... this shouldn't be stressful! AnjelWolf
Exactly as KW says...you need to look within. It's there. It's always been there...waiting for you.
thehag
tayes i agree about wicca-i was just trying to put it more delicately and non judgementali must say-witchcraft for me has never been stressful,in fact very enjoyable and comfortable-unfortunately my thirst for knowledge and insight is unsatiable[smile]-patience is not one of my virtues, but i will try harder
Sandy
I remember many years ago I was lost like you are. Although I was brought up in a Pagan family, I was never "taught" anything it was just a way of life. In my 20s I actually thought I was insane because I couldn't find ANYTHING out there that suggested otherwise. It took me years before I finally realised who and what I was. My family, although lived a Spiritual/Shamanic way of life NEVER actually sat me down and explained to me anything, it just was and I never questioned it. When I eventually started questioning what path I was on, I had nobody to turn to or talk to. You end up going the Wicca route at first because that is all you will find in ways of books and information, but I think I spent all of 2 weeks looking at Wicca and thought, bloody hell, that seems even more crazier than I am :) The secret is to let it happen, don't pursue it. Open your mind and your heart and just look beyond as to what is around you, meditate but be aware - not just conciously, I mean subconciously. Literally breathe in the Universal Energy and allow it to flow through you rather than trying to force it or you will get nowhere and become frustrated. Like Ora said, find a beautiful place, a sunset, a stream, anything that "moves" you inside that is SO beautiful you just want to cry because nothing else matters than the beauty of what you are experiencing. I live my life now mainly on another level, apart from being continously forgetful I am so content within myself - and you will get there. Marshy was the same as you, why not send him a Private Message and have a chat with him :)
thehag
oh yesyou have nailed it exactlyi have no one to bounce off,no to chat to-coming from a strict catholic background, very limited reading or information available in my area other than wicca,a lot of new age, self help and heal thyself as well as lots of traditional religions-i am finding it frustratingand i do believe that is what led me to you all-[when a student is ready a teacher will present themselves]i think i am beginning to understand ,[it takes a while]what you are all saying-just be,allow what i am and what is for me to develop naturally,go back to the beginning,to the roots-the earth, the universefeel and listen openly- to open my mind and heart and allow it to happenthere are many beautiful places and i will take ora and your advicei will drop marshy a line-ta

DarkMere
You know, I am so glad you found your way to this web site. You have made me smile, its so nice to see someone who has been confused suddenly start to see everything unravel. Suddenly nothing is complicated any more :) For many of us, myself included, its a very difficult journey, only to find that when you get here that you missed a 100 yard path that goes around the corner, and you went 100 miles over the mountain track. Its so easy to be pagan, you only have to live it, you then grow within it. You carry on listening to all the good advice you will get here. Anything you don't like the sound of, discount it and anything you like embrace it. Its all yours. You made me smile for a second reason. Sometimes its all to easy to forget the magic of it all. You just reminded me :)
RavensClaw
I think that you should read as many books as you can, but nothing with the word 'witch' or 'magic' in the title as these tend to be neo-pagan, very fluffy and for the most part somebody elses ideas. Look for books on folklore that interests you, cunning folk (men and women), herbalism, gardening, identification books for shrubs, tree's and wild plants. As far as how to find witchcraft.... well witchcraft does not make a witch, and a wiych may not practice witchcraft. You need to listen and do whats right for you. Hope that helped, RC

Ancestral Celt
i am afraid i am but a fledgeling-with my first taste of witchcraft-wicca-i feel there is much much more to discover and would appreciate some guidance ,could you suggest appropriate books to read-please:confused: There are some suggestions here: TW Authors and Books. On the practical front, I would recommend books on creative visualization, astral projection and that Psychic Self Defence book that gets a mention from time to time, too. There are very few good books on the basic of Traditional Witchcraft, mostly because each tradition varies in its approach, so its difficult to find a way in.:frown:
