sue_ann
Whilst on my travels around Salem at Halloween I can across what has to now be my absolute favorite shop 'Hex Old World Witchery' that had a fantastic range of books, I picked up this book which got a nod of approval not only from the staff but other shoppers. It looks pretty darn good flicking through I am just about to start it, anyone else got a copy?

Evergreen47
Super old post, I know, but the search button is my friend, and I didn't want to start a repeat thread. I thought this book was fab. Super practical stuff that can be incorporated by any witch even if they aren't interested in the religious study of Voodoo. I've made some of my best floor washes by using this book as a jumping off point.
Whiterose
Wow! Those prices are ridiculous! One copy is almost $3500!

Orin
Does anyone think Cat Yronwode's book is any better? Or another author? I am looking for a good book on Hoodoo and wondered if anyone could recommend one. (I realize this is an old thread but didn't want to start a repeat)
RavenFlyer
Cat's book is just a book on hoodoo. There is no explanation of voodoo practices In it. Which makes sense due to the fact that hoodoo and voodoo are two distinctly different practices. I have not read Denise's book so I can not comment on it directly. However, I can say cat knows her stuff relating to hoodoo specifically. If you are looking for voodoo books I would suggest Mambo T Chita Tann's Haitian Vodou or Serving the Spirits by Mambo Vye

I did a little snooping on her luckymojo site but i was a little put off by the whole business look and she likes to encourage people to buy her stuff. I may just be paranoid but i get bad vibes from the whole thing. I'm sure she knows her stuff though~

I read the first chapter of the Voodoo Hoodoo book and skimmed the rest, just to say I looked at it . . . any book that starts with a line that basically reads . . . Everyone can practice Voodoo. It isn't that hard" . . . loses all credibility with me. Anyway, I know next-to-nothing about Voodoo, but I know it isn't Hoodoo, and I know I didn't like that book. Cam
I found the book very superficial (in that she did not go into depth on the various material presented). I would have liked more depth.
Evergreen47
I found the book very superficial (in that she did not go into depth on the various material presented). I would have liked more depth. See, I kind of liked that aspect. Most of the time when I buy a book, I just want something I can build on myself. I thought a lot of what she covered was good basics which allowed me to build my own workings on that foundation. To each their own, though. I'm not a rootworker or Vodoun practitioner, so it was exactly what I needed it to be.

Jevne
I was speaking of Denise's book, but I am not a big fan of Cat, either, though I find her more knowledgeable in regards to the subject of Hoodoo.
Orin
Ah~I will get it anyway and just research to make up for the lack of depth.
Cam
See, that's the thing....if the book had depth to it, not much research would be needed, and you could spend your time researching something else.
Orin
I wish the book did have depth, but there isn't anything i can do about it. Can you recommend a good book on Hoodoo with depth then?
RavenFlyer
I have always thought cat's book had frith. IMO it's the best one out there simply because hoodoo is just a magical system no liturgy or specific association. There is a slight merging if some catholic saints into hoodoo but it isn't necessary to use the saints. Cat's book is more like an encyclopedia than a narrative. I would suggest anyone serious about studying hoodoo have a copy of her book. As far as other books on the subject there aren't many out there that are good. Hoodoo is still very much an oral tradition and the practitioners are still pretty tight lipped about it. You might want to check out Harry Hyatt's book Hoodoo--Conjuration--Witchcraft--Rootwork, Beliefs Accepted By Many Negroes and White Persons These Being Orally Recorded Among Bolacks and Whites, Volume Three. It is pretty rare nowadays and expensive to obtain for ones personal library but you may be able to find it in a library especially if you are near a college or university.
