Omens and superstitions- What do you believe?

For example:

A bird in the house is a sign of death (also, hearing an owl hoot)

I have a few, but I'm always interested in hearing what other people believe.

What are some of your sayings or superstitions?

I don't believe in coincidence. Like dream interpretation I think it is personal to the person. A black cat crossing one's path may be a bad omen to a lay-person, but I'd take it as a good omen.

I didn't believe in superstition much until my mum told me that if you get an itch on your left palm or something money comes in the home. She used to get an itch on a certain day of the month and then I was thinking well I don't see any money coming into the home? It turned out it was payday the next day LMAO! I tent to stay away from superstition though winds me up and makes me paranoid lol!

I dont really have any superstitions. Have heard of so many over the years though and they always amuse me. Although I have to admit (dont laugh), the one thing that I have always done is the old Magie superstition. Its silly but I have always done the salute accompanied with the correct little words when I see just one magpie. :cuckoo:

Its so silly as Im not that superstitious, I think its just habbit now. lol. The shame of it all :embarased: :embarased:

I tend to agree with Michele, I believe it's all personal to the person interpreting (and experiencing) the omen. I think we all have some personal omens and superstitions. :)

Would have to add that Omens and Superstitions are two completely different things. As I said in my previous post, I dont really have superstitions. But omens are a different thing. Very personal and unique to the individual, tribe, etc.

But for me Superstitions are not remotely the same as Omens and signs

I just can't stop myself-after spilling the salt, throwing a bit over the shoulder.

Damn you caught me out Old Crone.:embarrased: I would have to ashamedly admit to that one aswell. lol

How many "give the devil his due?" I always save the last bite of everything I eat for the devil, whose role is currently being filled by BTF (Buck the Fuck for those who have not had the dubius (sp) pleasure of meeting my dog).

lol. And again I another one that I must admit to doing. Although that I dont really see giving the devil his due as a superstition when I perform it. More a mine libation without the pomp and circimstance. lol

I have always believed that what you do believe will happen just from your own worries of it. I do like the ones that are positive like money and such. Those ones I wish I could believe but I never really did believe in those things to much.

I am embarassingly superstitious, though it's mainly ones passed down through the family than widely known ones. I have no problem walking under ladders etc, but can't see cutlery being crossed.

Find a penny, pick it up, all day long, you'll have good luck.

Thats one I do.....don't know why....never did it as a kid.

The only other one is putting shoes on a table. Mum said it was bad luck! So no shoes on tables here whether thier on your feet or not!!!!

I guess the only one I have is a variant of Morgana's ... if the penny is face up, pick it up for good luck all day. If it's face down, turn it face up for the next person - that'll bring you luck as well.

Otherwise, I love listening to the owls in our neighborhood, don't mind walking under ladders (unless they look unstable), love black cats, and my palm itching has never been a sign I'm getting money.

See a pin and pick it up and all the day you'll have good luck is one I follow.

I also don't walk under ladders and I throw salt over my shoulder if I spill it.

Also, I buy lottery tickets on Friday, 13 - a family lucky day - haven't won yet. :naughty:

Never pick money up from a crossroads it could be a curse, or worse a wart for sale ...

I always salute a magpie ...

I blow a kiss to the full moon and turn over my money..

Wow and here was me thinking that i was the superstitious one, whats even better is the fact that these superstitions seem to be world wide and have lasted the tale of time.

crossed knives and shoes on tables usually got me a clip round the ear when i was young (so definately unlucky) and to this day i still dont do either.

Itchy palms and picking up pennies dont bother me but the wife swears by them.

The only thing i have to add is an Omen which i think might be quite localised to the North east of scotland.

A single crow sitting on a chimney piece crowing is a sign of death visiting that house

there are alot of owls around here, so I cant say the hooting omen is one that I could follow! I have always thought bats were lucky - lucky to see them in the garden, that sort of thing, esp. if they fly in circles above you - but not sure why though.

I pretty much see meanings in everything, probably too much too be honest - crossed branches, natural symbols in earth etc - Im not very superstitious, although I hate to walk over covered wells, draincovers, that sort of thing ...

I pick up a penny when its face up but usually leave a facedown penny lay...I never knew what one was supposed to do with that. Thanks MW---now I will turn it over for the next person. Of course, picking up a penny has always brought me money...exactly 1 cent. :roflhard:

I walk under ladders unless it looks like its dangerous. I love black cats so no problem there.

I don't know about the crossed cutlery. What is that??

I guess I am not too superstitious. Omens on the other hand...if something really seems to jump out at me I will look for meaning.

I read once that the walking under ladders things was so you don't break the holy trinity...so, since then, I have gone out of my way to walk under ladders...but that's just me :)

I have a few superstitions, some have been mentioned already, others are,

Touching iron,

Touching wood,

and I also spit when I urinate.

Branred.

Ok.. I have to know. Why do you spit when you urinate? I have a feeling I may regret asking, but can't help myself.

I'm not sure how much I actually believe, but I do some superstitious things for the heck of it, I guess.

I knock on wood when I don't want to jinx myself.

I used to kiss my hand then touch the roof of the car when going under a yellow light. - This is supposed to help insure you make it through the yellow light without getting hit by another car. My ex made me stop doing this... so I've gotten out of the habit.

I don't normally walk near ladders... lol so I can't say I've had the chance to walk under them much.

I have had a short history of having extremely bad luck on Friday the 13th. We have one 2 days from now. I'm a little nervous. lol

I do pick up pennies that are heads up. If I drop a penny & it lands heads up, I leave it for someone else.

When I was younger, I was afraid of the dead. I used to hold my breath when going by cemeteries. This all changed when my cat, Tommy died. I held his dead body all the way home, and even after his bladder had given out on me.

While doves are probably the most stupid bird, aside from the do-do, I will come to a complete stop for fear of hitting a dove, being symbols of peace and all.

I'd always keep a 4 leaf clover for luck.

I can't think of anymore at the moment!

i pick all the coins;), somethimes i look for clover with 4 leafs, and i have one custom after my grandmother - i don't put new things [i mean bought this day] on the bed. My granny says if i put a new thing [lets say a present for someone] on a bed, this person won't like it.
