Where I grew up, the traditions surrounding horseshoes varied according to your country of origin. The Irish contingent had them ends up (so the luck was captured and never ran out), the Italians ends down (never knew why). Either way, they were considered lucky and were prized.
Old Sydney Town (a theme park) had piles of horseshoes they used to sell and they were a very popular item.
Some brides still carry white, lace horseshoes (ends up) along with their bridal bouquet.
