green_embers
Hi, I realize this Forum does not push one methodology (which I like-I fucking hate rules). Moreover, I love the idea I have heard expressed, "that each should find their own Witchy way" that is very cool! Nevertheless, I do not want to wake up dead or a toad some morning. Therefore, could anyone give me the agreed upon things someone new to "their Witchy way" should not attempt or go in unprepared. For example, if you go into combat; the first fucking thing an Officer tells the Soldiers is a few tricks to survive his first stinking day in the field. For instance, keep your ammo dry, (there is something else here I won?t add in mixed company) and always look for cover, even if just smoking a damn cig. I hope this is not asking too much; however, I want to play safe-someone could loose an eye you know!:frogspells:

Michele
It's a hard question, and a frustrating one as there IS no answer for one working alone. It's like someone telling you to learn to walk, but saying don't fall down because you'll get hurt. One mistake I made early on was I "called" something to see if it would come. It did. Cool! I had dinner and went to bed. I didn't know you had to send it back. New even less that not all things are so eager to leave. I'd say know how to "clean" your house and yourself (and anyone else, including pets) who live with you. I'd also learn some anti-hex thiings and put up some strong protections around your home. I'd also stay out of situations where someone would WANT to hex you. Start learning protections first. For me, I'd also start working with your ancestors, protectors, and guides who will protect you and guide you. Work on establishing a relationship with them. I wish I'd know about that earlier ;-)
Guest Lea
I think it is only natural that as humans, we make things harder than they actually are. I understand your feelings and if you put protection in line, your first step, you will be fine. And by protection, I mean "grounding yourself". If you do a search on grounding you will find a lot of info here.

Cairelle
Never leave a lit candle and a cat alone in the same room. HA! Believe it or not I learned that one the hard way. Just because it's in a glass jar doesn't mean the cat won't mess it up. LOL! As to pissing me off... well Anjel's got some nerve. Talk about pots and kettles. Bwahahaha! You've gotten some excellent advice here. Read the forums, use the search button, and Google's a wonderful tool as well. If you find something that you are not sure is bunk or not, bring it here - we'll sort you out. :D
circelilith
only ever do what you feel comfortable doing. Frankie
As everyone before me said, don't delve into something that you are not 100% sure about! And the books section here has some awesome readings. Just take your time until you feel comfortable.

And the books section here has some awesome readings. Just take your time until you feel comfortable. I understand the being 100% sure; however, for one who works alone, there IS no way to be 100% sure about something prior to delving. There is no one to work it with you. Again, it's like saying don't try to walk until you are sure you won't fall down - impossible! You can't LEARN to walk without trying it... so I'd say, just be as careful as you can, know as much as you can about getting yourself OUT of a mess, use common sense, if it doesn't feel right, don't do it, read as much as you can, dream as much as you can, and take baby steps testing the waters as you go... PaganMama
Do research and go with what your comfortable with. Im gonna check out the books posted on this sight, but I always end up doing what I can my way anway. If I could turn someone into a toad... I'd be croaked up with excitement... LOL ... there would be an abundant increase in toads in the US. hahaha:razz: My favorite is bindings, its not that hard, and it takes feeling and concentration. PaganMama
Hey Michele, I 'called' something one time, also, and didn't know to send it back. I was reminded from an old friend. I said, Oh yea, and still waited 2 days. I was kind of amazed it was me, it couldnt have been. was pretty cool. I re-read the thread, and am now uncertain to exactly what the question was. it kind of looks like a couple of meanings. mmm. someone, or something attacking you magickly? or like an annoying somebody wont leave you alone? something about being turned into a toad, also. :wasntme: I wear hematite made in an indian necklace, I carry quartz and pink quartz with me at times, and shielding.. I close my eyes, breathe deeply, and imagine an octogon of mirrors facing out and upward a bit into the atmosphere(to avoid bouncing onto innocent bystanders) before I leave my home, or when i go outside to read and I may have to chance seeing the annoyance of my days, so the negativity she bounces off doesnt hit me. (sometimes i focus the shield back onto herself) grounding yourself at the same time will help also. i like doing this part on my lil porch, with the air in my face n the ground beneath me. am I going in the right direction? a person you can bind, or 'freeze'. Ill keep reading through, theres alot of good advice in here. :)
sarasuperid
Safety: A lot of materials sold to witches that look like they can be used with fire, cannot be used with fire. Glass candlestick holders--especialy really thin ones, can crack or burst. Many cauldrons, are only decorative--or can only take some heat. Spells that call for lighting things on fire, should first be tried outside in a clear area, so you can see how much smoke and flame result. For example, one spellbook out there (I don't recall which anymore, probably one of Silver Ravenwolfs) calls for putting some salt and some alcohol in a cauldron and lighting it on fire. While this is an awesome sight, it makes a very big very hot fires--and only good solid cauldrons (like an iron one) can be used for this--and only outside or in a fireplace. Don't drink wine out metal chalices--without making absolutely sure they are safe for drinking wine out of. Wine can chemically react with certain metals and make it no longer potable (drinkable). You will likely start working with a lot of new substances as a witch, herbs, animal furs and similar--be careful about allergies. Don't drink a big cuppa tea of some herb you have never tried before, take a sip and wait fifteen minutes to make sure you aren't gonna react poorly to it. For outdoor workings, it is tempting to dress in pretty stuff, but remember to respect the outdoors, it could rain, get really cold, really hot, mosquito land, and so forth. Be prepared to work in most types of weather. I cannot stress how important layers can be. Although candles are really pretty, a lamp might work better outside because of wind and rain. KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT. After casting a spell, until it has worked. Don't talk about it, to anybody. And certainly don't think on how you doubt it will work, and did you do it right and yada yada. Spellwork works best when you put it mostly out of your mind or only think further positive thoughts about it. Telling other people can cause them to think it isn't gonna work and that can dampen your spell, or they might just plain secretly or unknowingly (Even to themselves) be at cross purposes with you. Sure your brother is always really supportive of you getting a new job--but maybe he is uncomfortable that you will get a better job than him or make more money than him--telling him about your spell is not a good idea then. That is what advice I have off the top of my head.
