Guest wortmistress
This is really the first book that I read on one person's path of Trad. Craft. It's written by Nigel Jackson, who has written many, many books on this and other related subjects. He gives his tradition's view on the working tools of the craft, who they honour, seasonal celebrations etc. A great deal of it is based on information gathered throughout history re: Witches, Sabbats etc and although I cannot embrace it all with conviction,a great deal of it sat right with me. It's a good starting point for anyone serious about investigating this path, although I cannot personally state that it is the be all and end all- it certainly isn't!! Droghon
Hi wortmistress, yes that is a very good first book for anyone wanting to find out something of the mythos etc of one Tradition's ways. There is a lot of information in it and not everything 'sits right' but still a very good starting point for someone wanting to know something of the mythos etc. I don't think any one book is the be all and end all either, in every book there is something we can gather that sheds some light on matters. Guest hedgeman
I love that book, especially the last section that has the spirit flight to the sabbat. I've used that for a few years now and it has worked well for me.

RavensClaw
Got it on order from Amazon, ordered it last week but its gonna take 6weeks to arrive:eek: Its also holding up my herbalism books!!!!!! Any other suggested reads for someone like me who has decided to start over and look into trad witchcraft? I've heard of Robert Artisson's book, 'The Witching Way of the Hollow Hill'. Anyone read it or have any comments? Cheers, RC
Guest hedgeman
Yes, the Witching Way of the Hollow Hill is excellent! The first part of it describes some mythology and concepts of the old ones and the second part gets into some truly interesting ritual work. The most interesting part of it for me is the circle casting which is done widdershins; which i've used a few times now and find it to be very effective......and very NOT wiccan. RavensClaw
Way cool, another one for the wish list. Cheers, RC
arabi
Someone borrowed my copy of The Call of Horned Piper and it never came home:rolleyes:. It was an interesting read and some resonated with me, some things didnt. I wasnt as impressed with his "Masks of Misrule" though... Tarostar's "A Witches Formulary" is pretty good, I enjoy it for the formualry itself though. Not really something I would consider a "Trad Book" per-say. Handy for reference though. Anyone read Judika Illes, "The Element Encyclopedia of 5000 Spells"? I've got it and enjoy thumbing through it often. Many different traditions included, though I question some of the accuracy...still very entertaining reading.
RavensClaw
I've got the 5000 spell one, it rocks! Hasn't she got another one out of a similar ilk? RC
arabi
It is a fun book, isnt it:cool:. I believe you're right about another one she wrote but the name is escaping me right now. I got my copy from Alibris, I'll do a search with them and see if I can find the other title.
RavensClaw
YAY:party9:my copy of 'The Call of the Horn Piper' has arrived!!!!! Just started to read it and I'm finding it very bitty..... is this just me? I think the author seems to be giving a nugget of info in each paragraph and then the onus is on you to go find out more.... is that how you have found it? It is very enjoyable. Guest hedgeman
The part that i've found the most useful is the Mysterium Sabbati pathworking. I've used this for years to make contact with the underworld. Otherwise, i do see what you mean. I really enjoy the lore that the author touches on, but i've sought out additional sources to expand on what is in the book. Have you read The Witching Way of the Hollow Hill by Robin Artisson? RavensClaw
Hi Hedgeman, I've ordered 'the witching way of the hollow hill' from amazon, should be here in a few weeks. Its a bit of a pain the way small press books take forever to arrive, but its something to look forward to. I'ld be kean to hear about your success at transcending to the underworld if you would care to share any of it? Feel free to either PM me or if you want to just post. If you don't wish to share this, then I completely understand. At the moment I'm just going to read through 'The Call of the Horned Piper' and then re-read it and research the bits that jump out at me. Saying that I already have a list of things to research from it including: - legends and symbolism of 'white ravens' in relation to Swedish witchlore.- Black dogs and the hounds of Annwyn (my nan used to tell me stories about these) also 'The Hunt'.- Cathu Bodou (Battle Crow), apparently a celtic goddess but something about her called to me so I'll run with it.- Familiar Spirits... inparticular animal fetches, toads, Cat Sith and Malkin (hare).- The secret historical society of Toadmen and also the Horsemens Word.- And finally the Corpse Roads and Elfhame. I think that should keep me busy for a while. If anyone else reading this knows about any of the above, could you let me know....might save a bit of trawling the web, books etc. Regards, RC
