Hello everyone, i wanted to say i am learning so much since i joined and ty again for letting me.

I wanted to ask about spirit animals, heck i should ask about the ones that find me during the warmer months in my yard lol. Since i had decided about i would say 8 years ago that meditation was something that worked well in bringing me answers and giving me a space to open my mind. That was the first time i attracted a spirit animal. But not the last. I seem to be attracting spirit animals left and right, i thought probably for certian circumstances but its not the case. Talked to a friend about it seems to think i am a beast master of sorts that animals just naturally call to me. Either way i think its great, a bit scary at times when wild animals tend to walk up to you out of no where but none the less fun.

Anyone have similiar experiences with spirit guides/animals/familiars? Would be great to share with others and experiences (nothing to personal of course) but if so what kind of animals were they?

The connection between a witch and their animal spirit/familiar is quite intense and surreal at the same time.

My 3 main are: Wolf, Owl and the Shark. All 3 are predators and primarily loners (though wolves are in packs).

As each animal became known to me, the initial encounter was intense, intimate and one that would forever be etched in my memory. The encounter with my wolf spirit found me in tears, mixed with happiness, rememberance and a sense of "coming home"...the owl encounter found me in wonderment, freedom and hearing distant drums...the shark encounter found me feeling urges of hunting, seeking and control.

Each of my encounters were actually with the real animals...and as I have stated before...the encounters will forever be etched in my memory.

My first spirit animal was with a small sea turtle. It was a very special moment for me. Almost every encounter i have had has been vivid, almost like watching a dream in HDTV but with extreme color. The second was with a cheetah, very protective but walks alone yet not lonely. The third was with 4 wolves, each a distinct feature about them and all have different colored eyes but i could tell one was the leader of the small pack. After that point is were it became interesting.

Theres a local fox that every year (dont think its the same one but part of the same family) has a littler and shows up in my front yard to welcome the spring. They are very brazen, dont like most people but walk right up to me and sit to watch what i do. I have a tendency to protect them and they come back every year.

The interesting part is after this point, spirit animals have been showing in groups. But the one thing they have in common is they tend to be predators or top of their species like large birds of prey, bears, large snakes, large cats, even a whale or group and sometimes graziers like moose/deer sort and even a raccoon which was to say the least, funny. Since then i have been fasinated with the animal world more so than normal.

I have 3 animals that frequently visit.

Wolf - he always comes in dreams because i live in Australia so i've never seen a wolf in person before and i don't think we have any zoo's with them, but he pops in from time to time - usually when i've got a lot on my mind or i'm depressed i'll have a dream about walking in this amazing forest and meeting up with him and i'll just sit and pat him and have quiet time, then he lets me know when it's time to go. I cherish the time with him because he brings me strength and peace - i'd love to see wild wolves one day

Dragonflies - these guys are always around in summer, zooming around my head whether i'm in my backyard or out somewhere i can usually spot one hovering around. I love watching them they're so beautiful in the sunlight :D

Magpies - this is a recent one because a family has just moved into the trees in my backyard and they're so beautiful and big!! The daddy is just this enormous bird who sits on my clothes line and he's never worried about me, he just looks at me and continues doing what he's doing. They are wonderful and i feel blessed that they have chosen my trees to live in because i'm told that they choose a spot and they'll return for years on end with their new babies every year, so i look forward to meeting the next generation next year :D

I was 15 when I first saw my animal spitit. I lived on a farm where we had about a hundred and fifty cattle. One of my daily jobs was to check on the herd to see if there were any calving problems. On this particular day I was walking back to the house when I cut through the edge of the forested land we owned. As I crested a hill I saw a large bird flying through the trees coming in my direction. It was like watching a small stunt plane the way it weaved in and out of the trees, often through spaces that seemed impossibly small for the creature to have anywhere near the clearance it needed. When within feet of me it landed on a low branch that hung across my path. Easily within three meters, it was larger than any bird I had ever seen close up. It was a Great Horned Owl. A creature not known for daylight appearances and rarely seen by most of the population. It had a red fox squirrel hanging in its talons. I sat quietly on a fallen log and watched with all my attention. It tore the squirrel (They are an extremely tough creature, I had gotten one or two before when hunting. Even the sharpest knife is put to the test when trying to butcher one of these squirrels.) The owl watched me for a second or two and then proceeded to tear the squirrel apart like it was made of thin paper. We had eye to eye contact for several minutes, but he knew I was no threat. At one point he tossed a piece of the squirrel so it landed at my feet. In a state of amazement I sat there till he finished his meal and then flew back inti the deeper woods. In the decades since the appearance of Great Horned Owls has been too many to count ,often in broad daylight, often across my hood on night time drives. Spirit guides are in my case a portent of change. To the day I die I will never forget that first appearance. It did touch my soul and has had an ongoing influence in my life. Rune

Wow runewriter that is a beautiful story, and must have been an experience beyond imagination. I find myself telling a few about just such experiences and they look at me in disbelief as if animals could never connect with humans. Im really glad i posted this because now i dont feel as weird talking about it because im not the only one who has had similiar experience. Thank you all for sharing with me!

Hi LDG,

My first connection was with horses, I rode quite a lot when I was younger and in my teens learnt a form of horse whispering. I have felt a very close affinity with horses ever since, and also feel they lead me to craft - although that story would probably be too long for this thread!

The second would be owls (which seem to be a common animal spirit on this thread!). I work quite a lot in the new forest, and owls are always around, especially when there is magic afoot!

My main spirit animal is a shark...My experience was a very special one for me and I keep it to myself as its personal but I knew from it that I was destined to use the ocean and its energy in my work. Being connected to sharks (IMO) make the ocean my home and domain as well as the sharks'.

Thanks for clarifying about the shark. I have seen a shark swimming around in my minds eye before and wasn`t sure why it was there. :thankyou:

My spirit animals are the wolf and mountain lion. Both made themselves known to me in dreams. The mountain lion dream was especially intense and I actually woke up in tears. I felt that I had reconnected with a long lost friend.

I really love reading the answers on here. I am very drawn to animals in nature, they to me its almost as if most have no problem coming to me in real life or dream. I also love to hear from others their experiences with animals, i dont get a chance to really talk to anyone about it as i only have a few witchy friends, but they are currently too consumed by drama to discuss anything else lol

very frustrating wrote a post and then lost it.

The Serval - African cat, introduced itself to me recently in a dream. I believe it is a guide for me. It led me to a group of tigers out front of a house who i believe represent power and strength.

My first totem was owl, came to me when I was about 10. I did not know what that meant for years, but at the time, I knew it meant something. Right after I got fed up with xristanity, is when butterfly entered my life, more than 10 yrs ago, is when i began to study totems.

Since then, I have had others enter my life: (all but one was in physical form)
Fox
Wolf
Robin
Dragonfly
Bear (in a dream)
Raven

I have learned a lot of lessons from these. I have Cherokee/Choctaw in my heritage. So I feel honored to have them. (not saying that is the reason for my totems mind you). I believe they appear when needed. I can still recall my meeting with each one, as if it were only yesterday.

I've got a question. I do read a lot. And up till now, what I've taken out of books and websites is following:

Totems are those animal spirits that escort you from your birth till the day you die (and probably beyond that, too).

and then there are the power animals that come to help you in certain life cycles. Some may remain for a whole life, others come and go.

Or is that what I've read crap?

Scientists say it's impossible for a bumble bee to fly - their wings are too small.
Who's going to explain that to the bumble bees?

Animal spirits that have come to me in dreams, are, wolf, deer(buck) and Hawk. Animals will approach me, Im always surrounded by Birds, Esp doves. Hawks in this area tend to fly close to my home. I have pictures from my last place of a raccoon who used to come visit me while Id sit outside. Stray cats will flock my home at times also. Dogs will find their way to my home. Neighbors dogs mostly.

I also have that gift with animals. I revel in it, It's amazing.

I second Kiara's question.

I know I've always felt connected to blackbirds (large and small) and I'm used to seeing them quite a lot, no matter where I am. I hesitate to call them my spirit animal, but I know that whenever I see one or hear one, I get a peaceful feeling and I always acknowledge their presence...

Sometimes I feel silly nodding to birds, but it seems to feel right.

I like dragonflies also. they are the coolest lil buggers. and butterflies. My birds are doves and hawks. of course we have a full range of different birds here in TX and thye are all fascinating. the hawks here like to fly low over my head, and hte doves will perch on my railing around my porch. I need to see if I can get a pic of my friendly coon too. I think I did, not sure. and my main animal is the wolf. I am a cat person by nature, but the wolf calls to me. comes to me in dreams occassionally, esp when Im lost. havent seen him in awhile. when I met my dog, I liked her instantly cuz she reminds me of my dream wolf.
we have a different black bird, I Love them. they eat the fire ants.

I was listening to one of Peter Paddon's podcast about fetches/animal totems. He gives an exercise where you can meet you totem....a very cool one. Although I have quiet a few totems that come in and out of my life, I decided to give it a try...now I have a mountain lion...lol

:rabbit:I have been told that I am a spirit animal healer (or something like that), their energies come to me for healing and energy. I "get along" with animals quite well. Never really thought of it until I started meditating and a whoel whack of animals just came and plunked themselves down next to me.

The wolf, is a journey totem for me. I also have a close friend in the hawk and the transformative powers of the butterfly. Others come in and out on a daily/weekly/monthly basis to teach me what I need to know. I love them all.
This is a great post.... it is interesting to see the resemblance of paths and totems to people on the site....

I'm pretty sure my spirit animals are birds, but not a particular kind of bird. A family of robins made a nest in a small tree right outside the window where I practice magic and they surround the house with very loud singing. They perch on my chimney and sing so their song comes out of the fireplace and they are forever trying to get in through the air conditioner; a black bird and another kind did get in. It is really nice when they sing me to sleep.
