AnjelWolf
Ok...last night my husband rented the Wicker Man with Nicholas Cage...and we watched it. Now...given the fact that I am the proud owner of the original Wicker Man...I watched this film with sincere scrunity. While normally I like many of Nicholas Cages characters...in this movie...I wasn't pleased with. He simply wasn't believable here (a child can repeat words they studied from paper too! LOL!). This newer version gives a setting that Summerisle is run by an over-bearing woman (the queen bee if you want to say) and the other women where in her shadow (can we say JONESTOWN???) and the men were only there to do manual and/or submissive work, along with of course, procreate when needed. They portrayed this group of women to be stern, cold, ruthless, goddess-centered-only. The story focused on Cage as a pill-popping cop who finds out the child in question is his daughter...still he dies in the end (which actually I am almost pretty sure by the end of the film itself Cage was happy to die as well)...it really doesn't give anything in way of details or what-not about fertility rites...or anything...just some gore (on the men)...a bunch of hostile speaking females who would melt a glacier with their glares. There was no singing...no dancing...no nothing...just an empty movie filled with actors that merely dribble the words like carbon copy robots. My husband liked this version better than the original (I think) mostly due to the mindless violence...but he even admitted that this movie could only add to the bad reputation that many witches (especially females) seem to have. He will mostly likely buy this damn thing...if he does I hope he takes it overseas with him and it gets blown up...this movie is another carbon copy movie of any other B-grade horror/thriller/action flick. Then again...I am prejudice here simply because I view the original to be the best no matter what.
Guest wortmistress
Still resisting seeing the new version. The original has a special place in my heart and the new version ranks up there in my Top Ten crap remakes list... and I haven't even seen it yet! AnjelWolf
To be honest here WM...I wouldn't if I were you. The new version completely destroyed the beauty of the original.
StarChilde
Unfortunately I haven't seen either version! But having read your post I think I'll look out for the original. Who was in it? Ta StarChilde
AnjelWolf
Off hand I cannot remember...but I do know that the original is 10000000000% better than the newer version. You can look online for the original Wicker Man and see where you can purchase it.
Guest wortmistress
Edward Woodward played Sergeant "I'm so stupid thinking that I can convert these to Christians" Howie, Christopher Lee plays Lord Summerisle, Britt Ekland plays saucy Willow who tries to persuade Howie to get intimate using, someone else's stunt bum I might add and there are many other not-so-famous now people in it. A cult classic, despite some flaws, which makes a wicked film to watch on May Day!!

Scott
Greetings All Wow Anj .. that's harsh but I must say not unexpected. I have been shaking my head ever since I saw someone put up a plot summary and say that it would be not too different from the first one. I said at the time: "well you and I must have seen different moveies then!!!" I like the fact that Chris has already given it the kiss of doom a while back. I forget where I saw the blurb but he, like Gene Wilder before him in the same position asked a question that haunts my mind: "Why does it NEED REmaking!?" Especially this one ... hmmm should I update all my beliefs and have neon outlined dolmens to keep up with the 'hip crowd'? The Catholic church and the Masons have both seen that these tact tics don;'t work ... as one would expect the Hollywood types ... so many remade flops that were atrocious - I won';t even go into the attempt to update Dangerous Liaisons!!! *GAG* I love the original and have since had several hysterical evenings watching it with others. Anjeunot will surely remember the evening over in Alderly where he came over to watch it with us ... and the NOT pagan housemate who freaked out over it. HAHAHAhA! I feel CERTAIN he was SURE we were all going to roast him next!!! Oh did I mention Willow??? Nothing can delight so as does the part that lies between the left toe and the right toe! I'll be coming to say "How Do"! Then there was a more recent night when a local witch came round to watch it over here in Mt Gravatt. The wife and I had a bottle of wine that night, she came late (and so missed out on a superb goat curry the wife had made - serves her right!!) and so when she got in we were all grins and vinegar. Then of course we wound up singing all the way through it and laughing at all the parts we find funny ("Minister?!?" "Chop Chop" "You cannot change the fact that I believe in the Lord Jesus Christ" "Summer is a Cumin in" etc) and by that stage were rollicking about on the couch doing the arm thing for the grand finale! LOL She left quietly soon after and we have heard very little from her since. Ahhh well alls well that ends well. As I keep saying - get the soundtrack too! Just don't be surprised if - when it is blaring out of the car window as you turn up to the next meeting of well wishers - you get some really strange looks and a wide berth from there on! lol Fraternally Scott
AnjelWolf
Hi...yeah I have to agree my words were harsh about the movie (especially the acting)...but I did watch it with very "jaded" eyes. Now for someone who hasn't seen the original...then yeah maybe thy would enjoy it...my husband liked it because it had some "B-level" action in it...overall I just wasn't pleased or impressed with it and to be honest I don't believe in my heart I would have liked it much better had I not viewed the original first. Scott
Greetings Anj Yeah I know what you mean about jaded ... it's like reading a book then watching the film they made out of it. ET was a good example ... along with oh so many others especially including the dreadful treatment Wizard of Earthsea got. Danny Glover as Ogion ok fine but the rest ... "what's all that about?" sez I ! And the less said about the L:egend of Bagger Vance the better!!! The Novel is a MUST READ ... the movie is tripe based loosely on the story with all the wisdom and insight removed surgically .... icko the diddle O! Still occasionally there is a gem that happens in reverse ... the NOVEL of the Klaus Kinski Nosferatu for example .. lovely ... really lovely ... Of course I will be seeing it when it turns up here .. but I am already steeling myself to froth at the mouth and eyes! (As I so often do!) Lol Fraternally Scott
AnjelWolf
Yeah i would have to agree here that many movies made from well written novels are often screwed up and the audience feels like they are loosing brain cells LOL! I did hear through some local Pagans here that Nosferatu novel is good also...but not alot of fanfaire about it.

Tana
Then of course we wound up singing all the way through it and laughing at all the parts we find funny ("Minister?!?" Guest wortmistress
There are certain films that I feel NEED a certain treatment- like going to see Rocky Horror, throwing rice/toast, dressing up and adding own innuendo. I think we need to devise a cunning plan with extra actions and words thrown in (like the arm job Scott!!)
Guest Gary Mullen
Hello everyone! :) Just joined the forum today and thought I would introduce myself in this forum! I saw the original Wicker Man the other night and thought it was a bit overhyped. Maybe it was ruined for me because the ending had been shown in countless top 100 clip style shows so there was no suprise! The remake is meant to be sooo bad....I really want to see it! :p:p Gary.
