AnjelWolf
This is taken straight from my book "Witchcraft and Demonology" by ROSSELL Hope Robbins, 1960. COSTS OF WITCH TRIALS: All the costs of witch trials in France, Germany, and Scotland were paid for by the estate of the condemned witch or by their relatives; or, in some few instances, where the victim was penniless, by the landlord or citizens of the town Witch hunting was self-sustaining and became a major trade, employing many people, all battening on the savings of the victims. Witches, especially in Germany, were by no means all poor, and often the wealthiest were the first to be accused. Their property was disbursed to clergymen, judges, physicians, scribes, court attendants, torturers, guards, messengers-even to the laborers who cut the wood for the burning and erected the scaffolds. Less directly, the innkeepers and tavern profited by the crowds who came to watch the executions. To me, times haven't changed all that much...seems like everybody has their hands in my pocket these days! LOL!

Scott
Greetings Anj Well it sows some differences between continentals and the English too ... in some parts in England the spoils went to the finder. Ol Matty Hpkins made quite the trade out of it! Goes to motive, (as we'd say these days) perhaps? *G* Fraternally Scott
