Pendle

Recommended Posts

Anyone who's into their history, especially centred in English history has probably heard of the Pendle trials! As a Lancashire lass I feel connected to these stories and I've read a good few books on it and watched a few documentaries, because I want to get as clued up as I can. It feels a little frustrating however as it's all trial-centred and not much information really about the women themselves, probably because in the early 1600's there was no reason to document the lives of women like this unless they'd done something wrong and ended up on trial!

I'm planning on going to the Pendle Heritage Centre for the day and hopefully around the nearby villages where they lived (no one knows for sure where their houses were) and see if I can find out more about what they actually practiced from any sources which won't be tainted with the superstitions of those who wrote about them. Has anyone else been or looked into this and found anything interesting?

I visited Mother Shipton's cave last year which isn't far form me and though there is a very strong feeling there, it's so commercialised it's hard ot tell what was real.

Awesome shop though!

It seems to me that the only people that actually care about the old witches that have passed on are witches themselves. They were most likely women like us, with normal lives except they had a special talent for healing or controlling nature.

It only took one person to not like them and point the finger.

Good luck with your research!

Thank you Onyx, I've never gotten into Pinterest because I thought it was mainly crafting and things, I'll definitely check it out now!

You are missing out, try typing in Traditional Witch, and you will find all sorts of info on the Pendle Witches. It is also useful for Magickal Herbs, Spells (a lot of Wiccan stuff, but you can weed that out)

I do a lot of crafting so I get a lot of good ideas from the boards. Also a lot of Sacred art.
