This has been something that the women in my family have done for a long time. I was wondering if anyone else does it. It has always made true predictions! Its always fun to do it together on new women who enter our family.

My grandmother or mother holds a pencil that has a pin in the eraser connected to a string so it dangles (makeshift pendulum), over the womans wrist. If the pencil swings up and down this is a girl, if it swings side to side this is a boy. It has always shown or predicted the sex and number of children on each woman.

This is just a lil tradition we have. Anyone else heard of this or do it?

Not to predict pregnancy, but to predict the sex of a baby.

A small gold ring on a long thread (same pendulum), held over the tummy of a pregnant woman.  If it swings round in a circle it's a girl, if it swings from side to side it's a boy.

I got 2 x side-to-sides :)

Traditionally, the ring would have been a wedding ring.  Nowadays, not so much :P

I've seen this done many times, by old Italian ladies. It worked.

(Only, the make shift pendulum was held over the woman's belly.)

In my family we do this with the wedding ring (or a ring most often worn) by the woman in question. We hold the ring over the stomach and if it swings in a circle its a girl, if up and down a boy; if the ring is dropped or falls it means more than one child(i.e twins or triplets). As far as my memory serves this was a tradition brought from Italy by my Grandmother, and she passed it on. It was successful for my mom, aunt and aunt in law as well as my sister. We also tend to have 'baby dreams' if someone in the family has conceived which will generally prompt a flurry of phone calls and pendulum tests.

I'm 18 weeks pregnant, and my husband and I did the ring on a string test, using my wedding ring. The ring swung back and forth, (like from hip to hip direction), so I said it was a boy. I also used a rose quartz pendulum that I have, and it swung in the same direction. We have an ultrasound this Tuesday, so we'll see if that was correct. :)
