My Home Town

I feel for you. I've never known snow like you face. I think it would grow old real fast. I'm in the South, USA where this winter we had an 8" snowfall and most everything was shut down for days. That was the largest snowfall in 26 years. I'm in the South where in a few short weeks the heat and humidity will become oppressive and almost unbearable - the other extreme of the weather pendulum. Even now it appears we really won't have a Spring just jump straight to Summer.

I do have fond memories of a trip I took with my family when I was 12. We went to New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland in mid-August. What I remember most was how beautiful the flowers were as they had not 'bolted' the way they do here.

I can't wait to get back to the south in a couple weeks, at the moment stuck in Wisconsin so I feel your pain. I would never want to spend a winter here again.

"Stuck" in Wisconsin eh? You poor thing.

Hey at least the temps aren't in the minuses anymore, and yesterday was really pretty outside.  There was this big round bright thing up in the sky that felt kind of warmish.

LOL, glad you all enjoyed it.

Hey Lynn, I like S&G songs too. I got a good laugh out of the parody on this one - made this winter not as bad - plus we are starting to get some better temps (although it is still snowing on some days, bleh)

Birdies, schmirdies, lol. And now the summer is going to be hotter than usual - and I don't like excess heat and humidity. I'm going to be a real bundle of joy, lol.

From environment Canada - about my home town (the same applies to where I live now which is rural to Winnipeg.

Environment Canada's senior climatologist Dave Phillips said Friday Winnipeg is emerging from the coldest winter since 1898.

"It was 116 years ago," he said. "And think about it. In 1898, there was no talk of global warming or urban heat islands, no cars or pavements and the population was a twentieth of what it is now in Winnipeg."

He said it's no small achievement to make it through the coldest winter in more than a century.

"Just keeping your home and your business warm has cost you about another 17, 20 per cent more so, not a lot of good things we can say about it except the fact that you survived it," Phillips said.

He said on average, temperatures during the period of December through March

were 6 degrees colder than normal.

Phillips also said the past winter was one of the snowiest since 1898.

Environment Canada said on top of that, Winnipeg got another 5 cm of snow Thursday, but it was wet snow and some of it at least, quickly disappeared. The rest of southern Manitoba got either the same or less.

Phillips said there are indications winter is coming to an end. The mercury is forecast to climb into double digits next week.

But he said, don't get carried away, because 12 per cent of Manitoba's annual snowfall arrives in April.

"We do see a significant change of a season when you get into April," he said. "The bad news is, don't put away the snow shovel."

Phillips said even further ahead, May through July are expected to be warmer than usual, with normal precipitation.
