RoseRed
I haven't read these in a while but the topic of 'true names' came up in a thread (http://www.traditionalwitch.net/forums/topic/8276-witchy-names/page-5?do=findComment&comment=146718) and it reminded me of this series. I haven't read it in a while but I do think I'll read it again someday. It's a 4 book 'coming of age' series. The main character, Eragon, finds out that he was a dragon rider when he finds a dragon egg. It follows his progression of learning to use magic, dealing with different races, his relationship with his dragon and their war for freedom. It's a very well thought out 'other world' type of series. It's got magic, wizards and witches, dragons, elves, dwarfs, wars - all the good stuff. When the 4th book came out there was talk about 'maybe someday' writing a new series where this one left off. Michele
Thank you - I will check it out! I really enjoy the Lord of the Rings type books. If anyone is interested, the Muirwood series was really good (first one is The Wretched of Muirwood) and although it was pure fantasy it was realistically-enough written that it didn't feel like you were reading a cartoon, and had enough adult elements in it that you didn't feel like you were reading pre-teen. Athena
I love these books! I have been reading them since book 1 came out and ds1 brought it home from school. The author actually was 16 when he wrote the first book and he grew up near here.
RoseRed
I know. I couldn't wrap my head around the author being a teenager when he wrote the first book. I just couldn't believe it. You can see how he's grown through the progression of the books as well. I vaguely remember reading an article about the series where he said that the words just flowed through him. It's sort of along the same lines as Lord of the Rings, The Sword of Truth series (the lastest book is coming out this month!), etc. I think the next series I'm going to read is the Sword of Shannara series.
